Automated tesing would be enough to get on the podium and say they took 2 hours to port it. Obviously automated testing isn't enough for shipping code.
They said they took 2 hours to port it, they didn't say anything on how lonk it took to test it. Or maybe they they only did a short test of the core functionality to verify that everything was allright. After all, it's not like they were shipping the new code after those 2 hours.
Two words: Automated testing.
Mathematica is a devellopment platform, it's certain that they have tests that validate if hte code is outputting correcty for a given input.
At Nintendo: [Boss walks into a worker's cubicle...] -Hi anderson, I was just.. whhaa?!? Are you browsing porn in the workplace? -Uhh no, you see, [looks at screen, sweating all over] these pervert weirdoes are abusing our company's copyright! -You're right! Launch every lawyer! For great justice!
It won't kill you and it won't kill me. In fact, I don't even watch that many movies, and most I wait for the DVD version to come out. But then again we're not the type of people who camp ouside the theatres a week before Star Wars begins. There are people who really can't/don't know how to wait for a movie, and those are the ones I was talking about.
Perhaps if they started showing the movie everywhere on the same date, this wouldn't be such a big issue. Why are the brits (or americans, most of the time) gifted with early showing while the rest of us have to wait? Aren't all movie goers the same?
Someone at these movie companies has got to wake up and realise that some of the people who download these movies recorded from the cinema (in rotten quality) are so eager to see the movie that they would pay the ticket if it were opening in a theater near them. Instead, it's the usual screaming of PIRATES!! to avoid looking at the real problem.

Ok, I'm not going to say sex, since I guess if you wanted sex advice, you wouldn't be asking slashdot...
My advice is: go low-tech, and do NOT buy him parts for his pc. In fact, do not buy him parts for anything. Geeks usually know what they like and you'll probably end up wasting your money on something that might not be usefull, or some brand he hates, or something. If you must go hi-tech, talk to his best geek friend.
Now, IMO, since valentine's day is about sharing with your guy, think about something you both would enjoy doing. If you live alone, or have access to a house for that day, you could decorate it, prepare an excelent dinner (check google for aphrodisiac dishes), get lots of cheap stuff from thinkgeek and spread it as presents throught the house. Alternatives are: -Get a (non-computer) game you both would enjoy playing. -Go on a trip somewhere nice. -Puzzles are great on a slow night (probably not this one, though) if you're both into those. -A movie that you both would enjoy spending the night watching.
Finally, don't rule out sex. You don't have to go all porn on him, but you could try something he's not expecting. Shaving your pubes, or getting some unexpected langerie are nice surprises one likes at the end of the day.
Oh, and don't forget, valentines day is about you as much as him, so remember to have fun:)
Hey, I never said his idea was smart. In fact iI agree with you, from what we know, in his position that's certainly not the way i'd spend my own 7000$.
What I was saying is that he's made up him mind and asked a technical question. Answering it with what I understood as being "you're dumb, use the money the way I think it's smart" was over the line IMO.
My problem with the original post wasn't that it was trying to caution the guy in to spending the money more wiselly, but that it was arrogantly *telling* him how to spend his money.
I have a friend who just did this to his pc. He got a noise blocker cooler for his cpu and a silent fan for his case. Both had manual control of the fan speed. At low to medium speed we were strugling to hear the fans, but as you got to top speed, they'd get loud as hell. Anyway, the fans at medium speed managed to cool the cpu to acceptable levels, so it was ok.
After that we realized just how loud the graphics card was, so we went back to the store and got the zalman passive heatsink. Boy did that work wonders. Now you can't almost hear his pc running, even without changing the PSU, which was a major change for an athlon 2000+ setup that sounded like a turbine.
He burned around 80 EUR on this little scheme, which is why I'm puting off doing it myself. I'm saving for a new graphics card.
That would put the Xbox 2 on store shelves up to a full year before Sony's PlayStation 3
My prediction: No it won't.
One of two thing will happen: either MS is on their usual scare tactics of promissing soon, releasing late, or Sony will just have to release PS3 sooner.
From what I've heard, the development on Playstation 3 is coming along just fine, the reason they don't want to release it sooner is because the PS2 is still selling like hotcakes.

I didn't know that, thanks.
The Matrix 3 premiere must've cost a lot then.
Perhaps they should compress their movies in divx format and upload them to the theaters worldwide *grin*

Wohoo! They took my advice!
A chemical that makes you talk a lot, but not necessarilly about what you want to hear?
Feromones :)

Steve? :)
Now now, don't be so hard on yourself, we don't really think it's necessary to apologise

And what do you know about this person's life that you're telling them where to spend his money?
Seriously, one of my pet peeves is when people think they know better what to do with someone's money than the owner.

Decisions, decisions...
Mayors all over the world rejoice!
