"Why do you still use Windows then? Why do people say they hate Windows/Hotmail/whatever, and carry on using it? The amount of Slashdot users that use Hotmail, and bitch about the mailbox size, or the amount of spam they get is amazing. Never heard of Yahoo? 6Mb free, and excellent anti-spam filters."

Or you could use a service that I've found called Shadango.com which allows me to check all my email addresses from one interface(including yahoo, hotmail, (and they're filtered!)) On top of that I get 20MB for each address! Now my work and personal addresses are accessable all in one spot. And the best part is it's free. If you're tired of corporate giants and monopolies then quit supporting them!

It's hard to win a fight when you don't know where to swing.

I have to say that I used to be a member of this service called Bluebottle, it did everything that shadango does and more....even POP access, then it got abused to no end and now it sucks! But yea so now I'm on the shadango train as well it's solid. Here is what i like:
    • You can check all POP/IMAP accounts from one interface(even yahoo, hotmail, and aol(and they're filtered!))
    • Realtime access to your IMAP accts
    • 20MB of space for each address you have
    • Calender
    • You can make "disposable" addresses
    • The customer service they have is unbeatable...unlike the big corps like yahoo!
    • There's no annoying ads on the site!
    • Lastly, they keep making improvements, very active development

I just hope that it can stick around and not go down the road that bluebottle did!

    That's my two cents

Very good point.. but you did leave out one of the 'up and coming' spam launching points -- zombie computers.

I recently upgraded a few networks at a local school, and noticed two very sluggish machines. They were the same build as the rest of them, but seemed to be working pretty hard even when they were just sitting there unused. I suspected a problem, so I isolated them and scanned their hard drives. I found a virus -- nothing unusual there (it is a public school) -- but I also found that they were firing off spam as fast as they could work. No mass email program had been installed, but it was working through a backdoor that the virus had opened.

I've heard about this happening in the past, but I'd never witnessed it first hand. I was alone in the room, and it kinda sends chills down your spine to realize that somebody else in the world is also using that machine, and that they'll notice when you turn it off. I mean, I'm sure he had a million others.. but still.. creepy.

I wanted to delve into the problem further -- to see how he was controlling them, and from where -- but alas, I was running short on time as it is. Also, an individual like this obviously has 0 morals anyway.. I'd hate for him to find out I was the one who shut down some of his handywork.

Anyone else had experience like this?
