check out the http://www.renewables2004.de/ conference that started today. there are a lot of alternative energy sources that are viable if you are willing to change your ways. (that, btw, would be a lot closer to being on par with fossil-fuel-based power if we hadn't collectively spent our inheritance on nuclear power in the last 50 years.)
