    In contrast, federal income tax is progressive because the percentage increases as your income increases.

    Until it reaches the point where you can afford to offshore or convert most of your money to untaxable trust funds.

    A little of both, as I understand it. Monkeys evolved to eat things other primates couldn't, which upped their population and increased competition in general. Climate change and the evolution of grasses greatly decreased forest coverage and created the savannas, both reducing available habitat and creating the new opportunity.

    why shouldn't they be allowed to do the same, if they are a sovereign nation?

    If they're a sovereign nation, I want all the tax dollars back that have been paying to feed, house, cloth and educate them for the last hundred years. About 1/6th of Canadian federal government spending goes to Indian Affairs. Now, a huge amount of that is wasted in the bureaucracy, but a substantial amount actually does make it to the bands.

    This is just another excuse to file a bunch of ridiculous lawsuits that will drag on for 10 years, enriching hundreds of lawyers at my expense, until some retarded judge says hey, why not, and orders another big check cut, again at my expense.

    Oh, and I'm still wanting the land back that those bastard Saxons stole from my British ancestors. Pay up!

    Well, yes, the reason the North fought was to preserve the Union.

    The reasons the Southern states seceded in the first place, however, were mostly about slavery, in response to many perceived provocations over several decades, including the extension (or not) of slavery into new territories, the rights of slaveholders to recover slaves that escaped into free states, and finally, the election of Lincoln himself, who was opposed to slavery and whose very election was considered an assault on the institution.

    There were 2 billion people in the world before the advent of modern farming. In essence, the world's 6+ billion people eat oil and gas. It is actually very hard to imagine the world feeding all those people without fossil fuel inputs; doing so while also supplying liquid fuels to any significant number of biofuel vehicles is a ridiculous fantasy.

    Any crop produced in any kind of modern way uses enormous petroleum and natural gas inputs; pesticides, fertilizers, tractors, transportation, irrigation.

    I get the feeling they're irritated at me.

    They are. Driving differently than everyone else around you causes them to take special notice of you; they are anticipating you doing something stupid, which causes irritation and alarm. Not that what you're doing is bad, but remember that everyone is driving around in multi-ton weapons and are very alarmed at any sign that someone is not doing so well.

    You really can't forward obvious spam anymore. It'll get you blacklisted all over the place. I would actually argue that forwarding email at all is a bad idea these days.

    Well, we'd all be a lot safer if we just stayed home. For those of us who drive in BC, photo radar was annoying enough that we kicked out the government that brought it in. Most people drive at a speed that is safe for the road conditions anyway, regardless of policing activity or arbitrary speed limits.

    They're objecting to being caught when not on a call, no lights, no sirens, etc. I know when it's safe to run a red light, too. Surely I should be exempt from ticketing if they are.
