T-19 hours and holding This built-in hold typically lasts four hours. * Demate the orbiter's midbody umbilical unit I don't have any idea what this means, but it sounds really sexy. yb.

I believe you have to request a (free) pass ahead of time. 3 days might be cutting it a little short - I know that most night launches are 'sold out' well in advance. The NASA site should have all the info you need on requesting a pass.

I was given a pass from a friend who lived in Titusville at the time, back in 91 or 92. It was awesome watching the launch. Even from several miles away where you are allowed to be, the ground shook and the air crackled.

My first computer was a Timex-Sinclair 1000 in 1984, no true keyboard to speak of, just a hard-plastic key area that you had to press pretty hard to register a keystroke. No storage unit to speak of, though I did have the 16K memory attachment. I must have typed and re-typed the code for a galaga-esque game 100 times or more.

Next came: VIC20 - programming in basic and playing lunar lander were my life

Commodore64 - using hackmaster to get all the games in the world (I lived in central america, rampant piracy and at 14 I didn't care), learned to program assembly

Local-shop-built XT - college and I needed a 'real' computer for lotus 123, used it and my dot-matrix printer to type papers for people for extra cash, 4-color games like might-n-magic and script games like zork.

Gateway 386 - still typing papers, now my games have more than 4 colors

Gateway 486 - still typing papers

Gateway P100 - first one I bought for myself, graduate school

    etc., etc.

Nothing unique in this list from the hundreds of thousands of other /. readers out there - many, many of us followed similar paths. What hooked me to computers was learning how to make the machine do what I wanted it to - from basic on the Vic to dbase IV/Clipper/Foxpro projects in college, the simplest programming project gave me the greatest joy with the computer. I am not creative in the sense of art or music, I did/do a little writing, but I've always felt that my true creative spirit comes out when I am coding something, looking for the most elegant solution and bending the computer to my will, and whatnot.

As for my kids. My 3-yr old loves nothing more than typing letters into a word processor on my laptop and watching her brother play games on the kids' machine. My 5-yr old has tons of ed titles (reader rabbit, arthur, etc.), plus lots of Tonka software games and some freeware checkers and sound makers. They're into it, but they're not hooked - yet. They pay a lot more attention to their Leapsters and dvd players.

You do not seem to have a databse/development section, so I guess this would go under utility category. I use these two utilities on a regular basis for database admin/query work. Free version of TOAD is a previous version of the very popular and very populare and capable Oracle DB admin/query tool (Tool for Oracle Application Developers). Must be re-downloaded every two months or so, but no personal information necessary to download. WinSQL Lite is a scaled-down version of a commercial application that works against any ODBC/JDBC connection. You are required to submit personal info in order to get a free license key for the lite version.

Hasbro had a sale recently on board games and I picked up Mousetrap to play with my 5 and 3 year old children. I remember loving that game as a kid, and they get a real kick out of it too. PayDay was another favorite, because of the funny business names and taglines on the cards. Who can forget/resist getting three friends' worth of track together and stringing a matchbox raceway down the stairs and out the door to see how far they'd fly, a-la FoxTrot?

We have digital camera phones, we have disposable phones, now we have disposable digital cameras...next up, disposable digital camera phones - take an uninteresting picture of your cat, send it to someone you don't really like that much anyway, call them to confirm they got it, and throw the whole thing away before they answer.

  10. Re:This seems strange to me... on New Disposable Digital Cameras with LCDs · · Score: 2, Insightful

The benefit is being able to recognize, delete and re-shoot poor pictures, which is one of the big pluses of digital photography. The $7 35mm disposable, 24 pictures, might on average net you 8-10 keeper pics. With the digital version, you're guaranteed 25 pictures that you want processed, because you can keep re-shooting until you get 25 good ones. Net-net, probably close to break-even on cost (assuming my 33% estimate above) - coincidence? Also, while some processors don't force you to pay for pictures you don't like, that doesn't alleviate the "sighing landfills" issue. IF you are going to buy a disposable camera, then this would be the more environmentally friendly version, assuming the cameras themselves are recycled as advertised.
