  1. English is a tortured language on MSN Planning to Take on Google? · · Score: 1

What exactly is he trying to say here?

"The long range impact on the relationship between MSN and Yahoo/Inktomi is likely at risk."

It looks like the poster has managed to contrive a sentence that means almost but not quite the opposite of what he intended..

Seems to me the heat does not build up. That seems to be the point. Obviously some heat is produced but if the filament does not get very hot then the tungsten should not evaporate. The bulb may have a very long life.

The article leaves a lot of unanswered questions. I suspect the scientists are more interested in the phenomemom than its practicality.

  3. Yahoo's SMTP servers are very unreliable on Tracking The Status Of Popular Websites? · · Score: 1

I run a set of ezines. About half of the time while sending, the outbound mail bogs down. When it happens, 75% of the outbound connections are to yahoo.com. The log files are filled with messages that indicate the remote host accepted the connection and then stoped responding. This is worse than a failed connection because the sending box sits and waits until the connection times out. This has never happens for any other domain.

I use qmail and follow the qmail mailing list. Others on the list have confirmed that yahoo is the problem.

My experience with Access (97) was that it is not to bad until the database size exceeds what can be kept in RAM.

  5. There is something new going on here on Our Attorney's Response To Microsoft · · Score: 1

Most corporations would fold on an issue like this when faced with the likes of the Microsoft legal division (maybe that is the part of the company that shold be spun off). But in Andover's case (and particularly with Slashdot) they have an incentive too turn this into as big a stink as possible. They derive positive publicity and create even more loyalty withing there community by doing so.

It seems in this case the positives outweigh the dangers of playing pin the tail on the 800lb gorilla.
