Considering that Yahoo! and Google will be entering in a pretty fierce competition (at least what the guys from Yahoo said), i think this decision from Google is pretty normal. The good thing will be, at least in the beginnning, Google must come up with a good offer: more space, POP access, good filtering. I hope this will work from them!
Definitely this technology has a lot of advantages, but can you trust the provider. i might sound a little cynic, but in the case this technology will be used the law enforment agencies will presurre the providers for confidential info.

But at least, it is fun to figure out cruel and unusual tortures for spammers.

I agree. But this happens because there are too many
stupid and/or clueless people out there on the Internet. I think they are the main danger today.
