I completely disagree. Internet Explorer is more then a webbrowser... same with Mozilla. It is a platform. You can do more with it then browse the web... you can use it as a framework to build entire applications... just... like... Mozilla.
Or maybe its kind of like being being one of 6 childeren. We all do our chores, except Mom decides to give only two of the children their allowance. It makes no sense. It has no point. If that isnt "broke", I must need shot
This is where things need to progress in a different fasion. Rather then making money explicitly by allowing you to listen to music, they will need to/should offer services that make me WANT to purchase a CD or whatever, rather then downloading it.
I think Bon Jovi and his people had the idea with their last album that came out, you could use the unique code that came with it to get a discount on the current tour and merchandise... and something completely exclusive, but I cant remember what that was.
Pop under ads? I bought a camera from them before I even did (or so I observed) the pop under ads. I paid for 3 day shipping. Day 5 came, no camera. I called them, and the machine pointed me to email whatever address for tracking orders. So I did that. 14 months later (this is no joke), I got an email with my tracking number. Now the camera came the day after I sent the inquiry, so even if it was a timely response, it wouldnt have mattered... but 14 MONTHS?!?!?! What... the... hell
A) Sure it is.
B) Again, sure it is. Maybe not in the way you are thinking, but that is a bad assumption you made yourself. Sure, you dont use COM interfaces to deal with it, but if you ever worked with either, you can, without issue, see quite clearly how underneath they are damn similar in concept.
C)Again, bad assumumtion on your behalf. I said X is not as responsive as a desktop windowing system should be. I said nothing as to why. If it has to do with something unrelated, then I think that the windowing system needs to take an approach that overcomes such.
FOr a workstation or server, X is perfect. I mean really perfect. Everything it does it to increase productivity. The problem is, Linux is TRYING to make headway into the desktop market, and X is NOT a good desktop windowing system in my opinion. Direct Rendering is nothing more then a hack, and a bad one at that. It reminds me of DirectX 3 on windows 95... and even that was more elegant an implementation. It can be latent in its responsiveness as well. I just dont think a client/server architecture is appropriate for a desktop, end user, windowing system. But I think it IS perfect for the workstation/server market.

NetBSD and X go together. If you are using *BSD AT ALL as a desktop operating system, you need to have brain surgery.
But I can tell you don't REALLY know what is going on... after all, "X-Windows" doesnt actually exist. What you are referring to is the "X Windowing System", or "X" for short (http://www.fact-index.com/x/x_/x_window_system.ht ml)
Aficionados commonly refer to the X Window System as "X11" or simply as "X", but frown on the widespread but incorrect label "X Windows", analogous to "Microsoft Windows". A T-shirt seen at an X11 conference bore the sentiment: "It's a windowing system named 'X', not a system named 'X Windows'".
I am tired of the Unix/Clone bandwagon. Quit using your hammer to stir your koolaid.
Your UID is meaningless. Thanks for pretending to be important though.
As for making me look stupid, there isnt a qualifying statement anywhere that I have made that "makes me look stupid". Much on the other hand, it seems everyone in this topic is spewing regurgitated crap they read from a webpage or a book... not from actual practice.
device Audio pronunciation of "device" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (d-vs)
n.
1. A contrivance or an invention serving a particular purpose, especially a machine used to perform one or more relatively simple tasks.
2.
a. A technique or means.
b. A plan or scheme, especially a malign one.
3. A literary contrivance, such as parallelism or personification, used to achieve a particular effect.
4. A decorative design, figure, or pattern, as one used in embroidery. See Synonyms at figure.
5. A graphic symbol or motto, especially in heraldry.
6. Archaic. The act, state, or power of devising.
You certainly "use" a technique. You also certainly "use" a concept.
It never fails when some troll has nowhere to go, they go straight for the spelling/grammer/typing. You obviously knew what I meant. I also find it extremely ironic that someone incapable of understanding "use" and "device" would jump on me for slipping an extra "E" into a word.
That's missing the point. If I have a C/C++ routine taking two pointer dummy arguments of the same type, then there is no way of guaranteeing that the pointers won't be aliased
Sure there is. C99 specifies __restrict__ and __restrict for just this case.
You talk like pointer aliasing is something common within an application. I must say that in the HUNDEREDS of applications Ive written, and the hundereds I was simply part of a team on, ONE used such a device, and the task was specialized enough that we even disabled byte padding.
Heh... there HAS to be code to CALL these functions. This code is good old x86. Else, I could run my windows binaries on... say Windows NT for Alpha. If that were the case, why is there a whole Visual Studio for Alpha Platform?
Not necessarily. If it worked like PGP, the encryption could be done right on the phone. And just like it works today, you could use any phone, not just the phne companys.
Virtual Reality implies interaction. In this case, a doctor puts on some glasses and a glove, and can navigate/manipulate the hearts image to get the details he/she needs.

This kind of thing has been talked about for a LONG time... hell, before the PS2 was even produced, that the "emotion engine" chip would be used for a wide variety of things outside of the PS2 because of its power.
I know you die hard XBox fans love to beat down the PS2, but the only reason it hasnt become the undisputed king, was the bad decision to limit the Video RAM to 4MB.
... Except for the fact that these projects are meant to run underneath/alongside LINUX. My suggestion is to be able to load ANY OS on a Virtual Machine micro-OS, such as Windows or BeOS. The best I could hope for with your suggested projects is to load Virtual Machine software on the Virtual Linux image... which, would add a layer I dont want.
For one, your low UserID just means that you had nothing better to do then sign up for an account on a news portal around its birth. Dont try and use it as some indicator of IQ or superiority.
Nextly, I simply voiced some opinion, and left it broad on purpose for the sake of discussion. Yes, I KNOW that even Windows itself takes control of the hardware, so my DOS cluster idea wouldnt work for that OS specifically. There ARE OS's that simply use DOS... Run as a compliment to DOS.
The Clustered Virtual Machine OS is a great idea. Rather then being vague and completely pointless in your retort, why dont you voice why **I** personally am stupid for suggesting such.

Sun is doing this right now with Solaris 9.... 10.

FOr the love of god... why is the parent +5 insightful, but my post is currently at 40% offtopic, dragging it down to +3?
I simply voiced MY reason I wont buy anything from X10. He says popunder ads, I say customer service. Same point, different approach.
This moderation system certainly is borked.

Because you can get it to work, doesnt mean the way it works is a good approach. See Windows and MCI.
