  2. Re:Kill the show already! on 'The X-Files' Returns For 8th Season · · Score: 1

I don't really have any opinion one way or another... I have never watched an Xfiles episode. A show has to capture my attention enough that I can watch it sporadically and still be into it, and for some reason Xfiles has never interested me.

The only shows I like are Whose Line is it Anyway, South Park, Drew Carey, 20/20, Dateline, Simpsons.

I think this sort of says something about present day TV programming... it sucks. There are no shows that I have to watch every week. My DVD player gets a LOT of use.

But anyways, back to Xfiles... as with any tv show, if the show is still reasonably popular, and they still make enough ad money, they'll keep it on the air. An exception might be 90210 which I quit watching after the first or 2nd season. What the HELL are they thinking keeping that show on so long?? Who watches it??

And then there was the Lois & Clark series... I used to watch it every week, and then they moved the time slot. And then they spent a month or two with episodes trying to get Lois and Clark married. Then once they got married, they came up with some totally far fetched episodes... they go back in time... things like that.

Old sitcoms get the "new child at old age" syndrome, in order to keep some life into the show. You know, once the kids get grown up enough that they're no longer that interesting, the parents have another kid. And that kid grows to be 5-10 years old really quickly. Then they realize that the show really IS not that interesting any more, even with the new kid, and finally kill it off.

Maybe that's what Xfiles should do... have Scully have a baby, the baby grows to be 5 in 2 months, and then she finds out it might be an alien.

If I ruled the world, no one would send HTML within emails (it was THE reason I switched from Pine, people didn't realize they were sending HTML email and I ended up yelling at brick walls about the issue). AOL would use real standards (right now if an AOLer forwards something it ends up as an attachment, and AOLers can't send more than one attachment or it all gets zipped, and there's the screwy thing where they insert images that only other AOLers can see).

What I find ironic about the whole thing is that for the Melissa virus, Microsoft said it was the users fault, not their fault. For the ILOVEYOU virus, they said the same thing and said they didn't intend on fixing their software. It's only after everyone still blamed them and they decided they didn't need the extra bad publicity that they decided to release a patch.

What kind of "functionality" does outlook give you that the other products don't? I use dtmail and calendar (the Solaris one) and at home I use Netscape messenger. (and StarOffice at home and work) I haven't seen anything extra that Outlook does other than propogate viruses for people.

(and my mom's been bitching up a storm because [IIRC] she can't print labels directly from her address book in Outlook, and then some other problem about it not liking being moved to a D drive)

From what I've read on Slashdot here, the issue is whether their "default password" is a bug. A lot of software/OS have default passwords, and if you're concerned about the security of your system, you make sure you change it before you go live.

There's things like that, and then there is the fact, that on my Win98 boxes you can boot it up and hit cancel on the password dialogue box, and do whatever you want.

Redhat is a good company... I have limited Linux experience, and Linux is NOT an easy install, especially if you run into some documented errors. I was having the problem where if it goes into the graphical install, the screen shows 1/4 of the actual screen you're supposed to get. You can't scroll the sides to see the rest, so it's pretty much worthless in terms of utility. Then, if you do a custom install (the default server install will boot directly into GNOME - which has the same problem as above) it gives the documented "anaconda" error. And on top of that, I can't get the IDE CD-ROM to be detected for the install (the CD-ROM I bought to permanently put in the box... I had to take my SCSI CD-RW from my other box).

So, I tore my house apart looking for the little card that comes in the box (to register for phone support), found everything BUT that little card. I called them at 8:30 PM EST, and talked to a technician almost immediately. He said that if I call the sales people the next day during 9-5 business hours, they'll be able to help me with the serial # problem.

So I called them today, and they managed to get me a serial # based on one of the numbers in one of the books that come in the package. No waiting on the phone for that. They then were supposed to transfer me to the tech support, but transferred me to a pre-sales guy instead.

This guy explained that I had to register online, and then offered/proceeded to do it for me. Then I called back a bit later as instructed (so my registration gets propogated in their system) and again with very little waiting (like 1 minute) talked to a foreign-sounding tech support guy. He gave me some instructions on solving some of the install problems, I've yet to test them and will find out later if I have to call them back for help again.

Now when you encounter a company where the people are friendly, there's no waiting to talk to someone, and they don't give you canned responses to questions... that's a good company. I know this is kind of off topic but I'm sure there are Redhat people who read /. and it's nice to get kudos once in awhile.

There may be more, but I'm not looking in the box at the moment. If you're having problems installing the software, you can also call a number and get some advice.

Also, if you have 5 Sun boxes or 1000 Sun boxes, you can use the same install CD on them. If you're running less than 8 processors you don't have to pay for a license and if you're running more than 8 processors, the boxes come with a license for the newest version of Solaris, so you really don't have to pay for it anyways. If you have a box with more than 8 processors, you usually have a support contract, and upgrades to Solaris come with it.

The screen is so small, you can't see a month at a time, and it's not very easy to look ahead in time. In the daytimer I have my to do list on the same page as the appointments, and you can't do this on a Palm. I've also found the to do list hard to use because it doesn't delete the items by itself, you have to go in and delete all the things you did a few weeks ago. It's just not very practical in my mind.

But for something small to carry around, with entries easy to delete once they become obsolete, in the address book... this is the #1 thing I use it for. How many times are you in BFE, you forgot to bring your daytimer because it's too large to carry around unless you think you're going to use it... and you NEED the number of... the local police, AAA, your great aunt who lives nearby but you weren't expecting on being in that area of town... any number of things.

That's why they sell daytimer covers with pockets for your Palm as well... they are great for in conjunction but the Palm is no replacement for it.

I own a Palm IIIx and I have a close friend of mine who owns a Casseopeia (which model I can't remember). I couldn't talk him into getting a Palm, he's into flash and "cool" factor.

He likes it because he can watch the Star Wars trailer on it (even though 1. he's seen the trailer a billion times and 2. it is EXTREMELY slow to transfer from his computer and his Casseopeia). He loves the fact that he can listen to mp3s on it, and he doesn't mind sticking it on the charger every night.

So, of course I got to play around with it. I found the device really heavy to hold. He's got a little belt holder to stick it in. It's quite a bit thicker than my Palm IIIx, and probably twice as heavy. I just don't find it to be the kind of thing that's easy to carry around. I keep my Palm in my purse and replace the batteries every couple months. I also have a REALLY hard time keeping my cell phone charged, I know that if I had a Casseopeia or even a Palm V, It'd be constantly running out of battery power.

I did find the interface on the Casseopeia to be clunky, and Jot wasn't terribly easy to use (about as easy as Graffiti was to learn... easy enough if you sit down and learn how, but just picking up the stylus with no training on Jot, there was really no way.) Of course his was running WinCE, and I don't think he's had it crash on him.

My one concern about the fact that the Win devices constantly sync with the computer is, what if I want to replace the info on the computer with the stuff from the device? With the Palm, you stick it in the cradle (without fear of anything happening cause you haven't pressed the button yet), and set how you want the sync to go, then press the button. I haven't tried syncing a Win device, but that's the impression that I got.

    Good things about Casseopeia/WinCE:
    1) Multimedia
    2) NICE full color!!
    3) more screen space

    Bad things (IMHO) about Casseopeia/WinCE:
    1) HEAVY
    2) Clunky interface - slow to find things
    3) Battery life
    4) Multimedia has only cool factor, no real utility factor, not practical
    5) Not very easy to tote around (thickness, large size)

I guess it depends on what's most important to you. Some people like flash and glitz even though there aren't too many practical uses for the flash and glitz (kind of like being the only person on the internet. :) I use the Palm for addresses and phone numbers, directions to places, and notes like the flight number & time of when my flight is. And games for when I'm stuck in traffic or sitting on a bus. My friend uses his Casseopeia for those same things plus showing people the multimedia so they can go OOOOHHHH. I don't think there's enough positives about the devices to merit junking the Palm IIIx just so I can show off something cool to people.

Oh yeah.... whatever happened to the whole "Windows Powered" idea?? Did they scrap it for Pocket PC or is the "Windows Powered" going to be something else?
