    Slackware is dead...

It was good a couple of years ago..actually i started with slackware way back in 94 :) i guess they just couldnt keep up with debian and redhat..

in other news.. stampede uses bzip2 to compress their archive formats..

    Tord,

First of all, thanks for BladeEnc. My life has never been the same since i found your excellent utility.

Next, when would the next linux version be out? (for i86) I've noticed that on your site, the most recent one is ...x72.. while the other Unices have a higher version out. Is there a difference ?

Also, could bladeEnc be made to output mp3 streams while encoding to stdout? That would be nice.. and helpful for streaming ppl with fast machines.

  3. Now we need to educate ppl about what mp4 is... on MP3.COM gets $11 Million · · Score: 1

It's sad how people don't really realise that mp4 is not an ISO standard or any standard. I was just reading posts on public-enemy and everyone seems to be under the impression that mp4 was next that has happend to digital music.

  4. I had a pretty good image of mac users but... on Response to John Carmack's Comments About Macs · · Score: 1

Reading this has transihed the image that has taken the past few years to build. I was never into macs.. actually laothed them before.. till i saw cool things like photoshop and myst and linux on mac. That's when i found apple stuff cool and the people who run them intelligent. (since they want to do some productive work without spending too much time).

But with this latest stab at carmack! Ack.. that's the killer. Now i'd view every single Appl user through a different pair of lenses. Hell, I'm actually going to suggest Carmak to fuck these ungrateful bastards and stop supporting apple computers altogether.

Hell.. just write quake III for linux (ps.. i'd like a alpha-linux non server version also)

  5. MP3 based pci/isa cards on MP3 chipset for set-top boxes. · · Score: 1

Now that's something I'd like to see. Not only should it be able to decode mp3' but it should also be able to encode mp3 files on hardware. Such hardware with proper open standards sell like hotcakes!

I know mpeg boards have been out for almost a decade and most of them can (with slight modifications) do mp3 decoding..

And these would be cheap! Would you rather spend 20-50 bucks on a hardware based mp3 solution than waste 20-30% of your precious cpu cycles? Not to mention the added speed of encoding if you had a hardware solution. I saw a mp3 based chip a few months ago.. why hasnt this been put on addon cards? ... hmm

  6. You have to download the full mp3 to sample it. on The Music Industry and the MP3 · · Score: 1

I dont usually reply to empty noise from AC's..

But let me make something clear.

The information bits that carry the id tags of mp3s (where you put artist name and other such info) lies at the end of the mp3 file. There is no way in the world you can move it to any where in the front of the file. Doing so would break compatiblity with 100% of the mp3 players and possibly defy the format.

If you were to put your own headers ala.. id2 you'd need to put it at the back of the file, which means.. you'd have to download the whole freaking file. I'm sure you'd enjoy that. And stop talking bullshit when you dont understand things.

  9. shoutcast protocol/mpg123 HOWTO on Ask Slashdot: Full Shoutcast on Linux? · · Score: 1

You can see the protocol (hehe) by looking at the headers

    lynx -source http://localhost:8000/

For a nice jigtter free mpg123 based shoutcast stream do

    lynx -source http://localhost:8000/ | mpg123 -

Ofcourse you should be running a server on localhost or reflecting another server through it.. Use mpg123 59p.. if you have a k6-2.. you can compile this with 3Dnow.. and a lot of other options.. (there is optimization for 386, 486 and pentiums also support for esound, nas and a lot of o other such beasts).

Hmmm.. on the fly mp3 decompression/encoding? hmm... have no clue :)

  10. FreeAmp is working on it on Ask Slashdot: Full Shoutcast on Linux? · · Score: 1

Freeamp is kinda ok. But right now it takes roughly about 50-85% CPU usage on my shitty Cyrix box. While mpg123 and x11amp.. hang around a nice 32-40. With that type of on the fly mp3 decoding and encoding, I dont think my machine would be able to handle freeamp anymore.

What I'd say is.. first fix your software so that it's as optimized as it is for any platform out there.. then think about plugins and streamers..
