  1. desktop thoughts on Gnome 2.0 Beta 2 Released · · Score: 1

i, for one, am excited about the evolution of GNOME, not so much as a desktop platform but as a pleasantly competitive basis for designing GUI apps on *nix. i think the desktop thing should be a matter of preference, and while some interoperability between GNOME and KDE would be swell, they're two very different project right now. as far as people wanting a quick-fix easy desktop on linux, well.. *nix has never been friendly, but i think the people who can get by with a few terminal windows, a couple GTK/QT apps, their gkrellm, and their window manager of choice are right at home. why be all-or-nothing about this stuff? choice is a wonderful thing.

  2. My Letter to sales, piracy@blizzard.com on Blizzard Rains on Bnetd Project · · Score: 1

    "To whom it may concern:

You have cost yourself a loyal customer as a result of the unjust legal action taken against the bnetd Project. I am not alone.

The Digital Millenium Copyright Act stands on its own as an ill-concieved law without invocations like this at the expense of the average consumer.
In this case, you have shut down a project that did little more than encourage the purchase of Blizzard games and take some of the burden of
hosting game servers off of your infrastructure.

You would be wise to listen to public opinion regarding your actions if you intend to remain in business."

  3. USB-based solution on Lunchbox Computers for Live Music Performances? · · Score: 1

go with the regular laptop, Mac or PC, and hook a swank new Edirol interface on it. for less than $400 you can get devices that have clean, digital sound, optical ins/outs, MIDI, and analog ins/outs. all in the same box, yes. best thing for the mobile musician, well, ever...

  4. Because it's Ximian... on Ximian Adds Subscription · · Score: 1, Redundant

If it were any other company trying to make money off subscription services everyone on this site would be lambasting them. But Ximian, everyone's favorite open-source poster child, apparently gets exemption from being criticised for a flawed business model. Hey, I pay $9.95 a month for my eMusic.com account, but they have loads of content. Is anyone going to pay for access to stuff you could just as easily grab off an FTP server?

  5. Never "asking Slashdot" again... on Has the Development of Window Managers Slowed? · · Score: 1

Well, I feel like a heel for even bringing this up, now that I've seen all the responses. It is a pretty banal question, yes. A WM should just WORK, obviously. And this isn't the most important thing going on in the world, but neither is sitting in front of CNN and chewing your fingernails. I only really asked to see if there was something new out there, but what I got was a faceful of harsh comments. This should be a place where you can say, "hey, what's up in this field?" without being shot by drive-by critics. So excuse me for being interested in something.

  6. because it's more efficient on Open Source - Why Do We Do It? · · Score: 1

We "do" open source because it's a better development model - the end product is stronger (most of the time). Say what you will about infighting and the group politics that can be found in any setting: there's a reason more and more "mission-critical" applications run on open source platforms and technologies.

  7. Violent Adverts? on Public Outcry Over Popup Ads · · Score: 2

It intrigues me that, while millions put up with television and radio advertising that literally dictates the content they can consume, it takes a frontier like the web to awaken them to the annoyance (some say "evil") that is advertising. But what do you expect if you browse the corporate web? Consumers demanding ad-free content from corporations may be living a nice dream, but if corps catch on that popups won't sell, then we'll see something else, like those ghastly flash-based quarter-page ads that appear on News.com. the short-term solution: use a good popup killer, or a browser with that feature integrated. long-term: don't browse corporate sites, or patronize corporate media. send a message that advertising doesn't sell, and that your mental space isn't for sale.

    you won't, though *grin*

  8. re: who is this guy? on William Gibson in The News · · Score: 0
Gibson would be the author of
    • Neuromancer
, one of the first well recognized cyberpunk novels of the 1980s. he is a superb writer and, while not a cybersocial thinker on par with those such as Jean Baudrillard, he always proves an cool interview subject. this one is no exception.
  9. Register.com Sucks the Big One, but NuNames kicks! on What Alternative Domain Registrants are out There? · · Score: 2

I've registered a domain with Register.com, in hopes that they wouldn't be NSI. However, all I got in return is lackluster service and domain updates that take 3 days to propigate throughout the net.

However, registering with NuNames was a wonderful thing. If they nixed their $10 service charge for domain changes, it'd be a perfect deal: $40 for two years! Hells yeah!

  10. Re:DAMNIT! Slashdot isn't freshmeat! on New X-Free86 Snapshot Available · · Score: 1

Wow, what a great idea. Let's make stable, new technology inacessable to the masses so some stuck up prick can get a few Kbps more bandwidth. Sure, make things hard to compile so people use Windows and proprietary software out of frustration. What an amazing community spirit you have...

  11. Check these addresses, all. on Hotmail Cracked Badly · · Score: 1

I strongly urge you (for a laugh) to take a look at billgates@hotmail.com, bob@hotmail.com, and xxx@hotmail.com.

    Gates sure likes his pr0n...

  12. Re:Who Cares? on The Re-Unification of Linux · · Score: 1

    >Linux and the Linux community are both too >immature to make a dent in places where 24/7 is >a requirement, not a feature.

And you call NT or its ilk 24/7?!??! I've seen Linux boxen running for months without fail, longer, even. Find me an NT server that's run for more than a week, two at best.

If you are referring to legacy Unix distros, however, they still have the upper hand in this regard.

  13. Children's Rights on Evolution is a Myth in Kansas · · Score: 1

No collection of miseducated, conservative, bible-thumping Southerners should have the right to deny children BOTH views (and others) on evolution. Denying children the facts (on any topic) should be a violation of human rights. See "How To Mutate and Take Over the World" by R.U. Sirius and St. Jude.

The same goes for denying sex education and other similar subjects. Misinformation and ignorance is the most damaging thing a school system or society can impose on young minds.
