No, it's still useful to have both on the same disk. For me and everyone like me...

I have no intention of purchasing an HD TV for at least two years. There simply isn't enough programming to justify it for me yet. (If I was into football and golf, perhaps, but I'm not so it's moot.)

Knowing that my DVDs are now obsolete: I'll be able to play them on future players, but there will be better versions of my current library of movies soon. I have no intention of purchasing any more films until I'm ready to make the switch to HD, since that would mean either sacrificing future quality or increasing my re-purchase list.

If there are both versions on the same disk, I can buy movies now and watch them while holding out on the rest of the equipment until it has a more reasonable cost. i.e. I'm no home theater guru, so I don't want to spend more than about $400-$500 for the whole setup. $100-$150 for the player and $300-$400 for the display, which I expect to be able to do in the 2009--2010 time frame.

I am however agnostic about the format. I'll be purchasing a multiple-format player (Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, DVD, DVD+/-R,RW, CD, VCD, CD-R,RW; the list is getting long...) when the time comes, but I won't be purchasing any films at all until then unless they have one of the formats and DVD (or I'm impatient enough to make the previously stated trade-off)

  12. Re:A zippo cigarette lighter on Gadgets You Backpack Around the World With? · · Score: 1

Yeah a Zippo is great. Because what you really want is poorly sealed liquid fuel *anything* in a bag full of textiles.

If you must have fire, use a butane lighter. The worst thing that can happen is that it will all leak out and dissipate, possibly making you a little cool depending on the size of the hole.

Ok on with the other bits of your list:

    - Wax dipped wooden matches
Actually not a bad idea. I assume you meant the "strike anywhere" variety, since waterproof "box-only" matches are pretty easy to find. Similar problem with the lighters though, make sure to keep them in a rigid container so there is no possibility they will rub against anywhere.

    - Camp stove (the little foldable ones that use the white pellet fuel - available at Canadian tire)
gas (i.e. propane, butane) stoves aren't much bigger, but are quite a bit more efficient and avoid the liquid fuel problem.

    - Metal pot/dish to cook in and eat from

    - Fork or Spoon.

    - Swiss Army Knife/Leatherman

    - Water purification filter/pellets if clean fresh water will not be available in the region, or if contamination is not biological (i.e. boiling won't fix it)

    - A mini first aid kit.

    - A good loud whistle

    - air mattress / thermarest
Ditch it. Not all that heavy, but a bit bulky. You don't even need a tent if you carry a hammock. Wal-mart hammock for ~$11 (with spreaders) is very light and takes up much less space than an air mattress.

    - Wool socks + full change of clothes
And nylon sock liners if you find wool scratchy. Poly socks are ok too. Stay away from natural fibers.

    - Dehydrated meals

    - Pint of Whiskey / Vodka

    - DEET / Cigarettes / Cigars to deter biting insects
Make sure it's 100% deet. Some companies cut it with alcohol ostensibly to make it safer. Unfortunately, alcohol increases its absorption into your skin and provides no insect-repelling function. Better to just use 100% and less of it. And on your clothes. From a pump rather than aerosol. (they're smaller and lighter than the aerosol anyway, and a little bit goes a long way.)

    - Bag to carry all garbage out in
Also, emergency poncho, rain-fly. The uses are endless.

    - VHF radio in case med-evac required. (FRS/walkie-talkies for within the group)

    That just about covers it.

iPod? MacBook? Stay home if that is what you are after.

And of course... Leave no Trace.

Don't forget to pack out your human waste too. If you find that too icky, you'll need a collapsible shovel.

Competition may be frustrating for people who continuously lose, but getting rid of it makes the games boring for everyone. The trick is to segregate them into groups of equivalent skill without singling out anyone into the "loser's league."

Perhaps by having non-conventional or out-of-season sports run concurrently with the vanilla sports. The better athletes seem to prefer the regular events, while the less skilled could simply choose something else if frustrated, always with the excuse, "well I like dodgeball, pickleball, badminton, or curling more than basketball, baseball, football, or boring football (a.k.a soccer)."

Any sports not practiced at home will even the playing field as well, so there's no reason to restrict anyone to any strata.

Anyone who says dodgeball is stupid better not play FPSs.
