As far as I know all of these are lacking the single most important thing, a robust and complete set of import filters for Word, Wordperfect, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.
Or some db development thingy like ehm... say MS-Access?? Lots of small businessess can use that kind of thing.
The 'common' people often don't even have a clue about what that Mhz or Ghz means. It's the people that sell the damn things that trick people into buying the one with the higher number. And they will sell either AMD or Intel based computers on the following: which brings more money into the cash-register. So if an Intel-cpu based computer brings more money in, they will say it has Intel Inside and that it is better than AMD, even though it has a higher 'model' number.
Yeah, WE know better, but most consumers don't. Let's be honoust... NOBODY at this moment needs a 1.4 Ghz (or model 1600) processor for the stuff most people do on their computer, which is email, surfing and the occasional letter. And if you play games (as a common consumer), you need to be educated on which 3d card is better, how much memory you need etc, which could improve your games much more than clockspeed. But that often is only done AFTER they bought a PC. Then the sales(wo)man is willing to tell you really need that new flashy shiny box in the corner with VOODOO-12 on it...
Most Americans probably wouldn't mind if the NSA only worked to listen to overseas communications. However, through Echelon, the NSA and its friends have the power to listen to our conversations as well, which we reguard is a violation of our privacy.
So it's ok to violate peoples privacy as long as they are not American? Ehm... well... that DOES sound American (read: selfcentered)
Linux is what the kernel is called... the complete system should be GNU/Linux because a lot of essential parts of the system are GNU?
If I write an app called 'Frisky' in a Borland IDE, compiled with a Borland compiler, and that app runs on MS Platforms only and makes use of MS.dll libraries I have to call it MS/Borland/Frisky ??? YEAH RIGHT !! Get a life and do something useful.
And don't be surprised, its gonna go up and down like a yo yo as we fix things.
But at least a yo yo is working when it's going up and down...;-) j/k... looks great guys !

Let's play xbill on it all day !!... This is a great idea !! Let's do it !!!
I thought the whole idea of copy protection was to boost the sales of 'legal' cd's. Not to bring the sales to a halt because everyone is scared of buying a cd that could damage your player when you try to make a rightfull and completely legal copy for backup. But then again... noone can make illegal copies when no legal copies are sold:-)
"they will deny the charge and, if that doesn't work, deny that the GNU is enforceable"
Could this actually happen ??? If they pull that of, that might be the single worst thing that could happen to the Linux community !!! Oh man... I just see alot of "Let's hear it for the BSD license" posts coming after my post...
I bet a lot of geeks out there that always wanted to have 7 inches in their pants.

Maybe that would be a cool geek-pickup line. Just to bad when the girls find out it is just another "battery-operated device"... Geek girls dig that though, I think...
It's still impossible to play downloaded vids (mpg, avi) or my VCD's in an acceptable way. That means... without skipping half of it. (p166mmx and 64Mb, 2Mb videocard,... no problem with Windows).
Home users will be impressed with this story but will find out they can't play their pr0n with a nice framrate.
Just gzip the file and send it together with the gunzip program. The total of the 2 files bigger than the original ? No way !! It's just, for example, minus 20kb smaller:-)
OTOH... same goes the other way around... If you would solve this challenge... the guy could always say : 'Nope... it's minus 20kb bigger' and will keep his 5k in his pocket...
If they really want it, they could also put the copyprotect stuff in the drivers.
Either way this thing is going towards closed hardware specs.
With open hardware specs and copyprotected hardware they would know that some people would write drivers that circomvent this. So they have to close the specs. (And then still.. some people will write drivers that circomvent this).
With open hardware specs and copyprotected drivers, they will know that some people will rewrite the drivers without copyprotect stuff.
(And so with closed specs).
I hope they don't choose a hardware option. I think that would be a BAD thing. Don't like the idea of a company commanding what I can and cannot have on my harddrive.
On another note: How the **** would they implement a thing like this on hardware? Sounds pretty impossible. And I don't mind upgrading software every now and then... But letting people mess with firmware upgrades just to keep up with the latest copyright protection thing that has just been thought of by company XYZ just sounds plain stupid. A bad driver is not as bad as messed up harddrive:-)
Just my thoughts on this... don't have any technical knowledge about these things.. so maybe I'm just babbling:-)
Just a thought. But why be compatible with one of the biggest problems Microsoft has to deal with... backwards compatibility ? It would be great for most people to have a MS compatible OS that just runs the 32bit apps. It would eliminate a lot of the problems, instabilities and bloat.
I agree. I have to admit I don't know a lot about the technical stuff but it seems to me that not X is bloated and slow but the desktop environments make it like that.
Running Gnome and Enlightenment on a p100 16Mb and 2Mb vidmem is just not an option. But just running a wm like fvwm displays things faster than MS can say 'where do you want to go today'.
Sure it is not 'user friendly' enough for the average joe, but then again: the average joe probably doesn't run linux yet. And the average joe probably doesn't have a p100 with 2mb vidmem anyway. If he does, he goes to a store to complain that his computer is kinda slow at displaying his address book and ends up with a p3-750 and RDRAM;-) to do his home finance. So displaying a 'user friendly ' desktop environment won't be an issue.
Tinkering with the natural order of things which God has decreed is not a "bit of fun", it is both dangerous and amoral and needs to be stopped.
Assuming there is a God ofcourse. And morals have always changed in something that was concidered immoral at the time. And maybe you could see it as the ultimate evolution. A creature (human in this context) that can create it's own evolution. What's wrong with getting rid of humans in the long run? They've made to much of a mess of things. And maybe evolving into something 'superiour' to the human race might be the best thing man has ever done...
The aliens I talked to lately think that this is the final step towards being accepted as an 'intelligent race' and become a member of the Universal board of Smart Species:-)
I think a lot of people use napster like that... Let's hear the music, then buy the CD. It's a lot better than going to your favourite CD-store across town only to find out only that 1 track is great.
And $12 is a very nice price for a CD. Unlike the Netherlands where you pay about $20 for that same CD. That takes a bigger effort to part from your hard-earned money. Especially when you know that across the ocean it's much cheaper.
That might be another reason in some countries for use of napster. These discs are to expensive there for the college-attending youngsters. If there's a way to get them cheaper or in this case free (as in beer) you can't really blame them, though it's still illegal.
The region coding might be anti-competitive, not fair to those living abroad wanting their native language on their anime DVD, not fair to people in general who could buy their DVD overseas etc etc.
But what's even worse is the inability to make a copy of your DVD's which is IMHO against the law (the dutch law at least) that states that you are allowed to make a backup copy of the media you buy in case of loss, corruption, destruction etc. But only for own use of course. I don't understand why this issue isn't used in court-cases.
Guess that would become a problem indeed, to still use the year as part of the product name. MS is increasing the pace of releases as they want to make sure the separate company that will make the OS still gets the same amount of money the complete company now is.
95,98,2000,Millennium... It would take the YYYY.1 and YYYY.2 names to keep up... That would look sloppy.
The following is my vision of the world. I *do* respect other views of it but don't respect people with an other view who don't respect other views. If I, in the following, upset anyone with my views, I am truly sorry. You have the right to see it another way but please remember that I have that right as well. I use the term religion here as a believe which involves a God. I know that is not accurate but I do this for the sake of the argument.
The way I see it, religion started out as a way to organize things and bring some order. They used things like values for that. Religion was also a way to explain things we could not explain at that time. A way to releave yourself of your responsibilities at times even (it is God's will).
Also it was a way to keep the masses dumb and restricted. Just threaten with a higher power you can't fight and they'll obey.
Ofcourse religion has evolved, but with the governments that have taken over the care (that religion provided as well) and control and science taking over the explaining part (though a *lot* of work still needs to be done) there seems to be no need to me for religion anymore, other than being an alternative to the current society, which of course is a good thing(tm), because people need to have a choice. But to me religion is an irrational thing and isn't needed any more.
As for the basis of values: that is something that we as a society take care of now. Yes, they are becoming different from what they were, but that does not nescasarily mean they are wrong. The reason for having values is not a religious thing: it is a human thing. Just like the meaning of life... If you look at it from a distance there is no reason for the human race to survive. So what if we polute the earth and dolphins die? And after that everything else including us? Would that be a loss ? To whom or what? Only to us. We make up reasons to do things and to live. A human is a selfish being. That is why we will always make up values. Not because they are right, but to preserve the human race... Just because we're selfish and think that we are important... Yes we are... But only to ourselves.
As far as I know all of these are lacking the single most important thing, a robust and complete set of import filters for Word, Wordperfect, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.
