  1. Re:But WHY? on Rumblings of MS Office for Linux at CeBIT · · Score: 1

Why ??? Well... bigger market for Office is one. And what about the VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) inside office ? Getting their own programming language into a competitive OS could be worthwile don't you think ?

And maybe they could build upon some OSS libraries that they would add 'features' (not bugs) to. Accomplishing that would stir up the Linux community probably. And the corporate world would embrase linux but only with the 'infected' libraries. That could break up the linux community. And nothing better for M$ than their competitor fighting amongst thereselves.

Could be a reason to finally join hands and stop all the 'the-distro-I-use-is-superiour-to-the-one-you-use' wars. And all the diffs in configuration etc.

Just a thought (and a negative one, but my damn Window$ crashed a few mins ago...)

  3. what about OUR copyrights ? on DVD CCA Applies for Restraining Order · · Score: 2

What has struck me as a little odd from the beginning of the DVD encryption thingy, is that (at least in some country's) you have, as the buyer of a audio or video carrier like a VHS tape or an audio CD, the right to make 1 copy of it for your own puposes (like backup in case of your original going bad). Just like all that software CD-ROMS that try to keep you from making a copy, isn't the fact that they use encryption on that DVD illegal? Now I can't make a backup for my own purposes !!!

quote One-click shopping, or banner ads are so obvious (to one 'skilled in the art', eg. a geek) that they shouldn't be patentable.
What Google uses is far from obvious, so this merits a patent"

A few years back the one-click shopping and banner adds were not as 'obvious' as they are now and if Google wouldn't patent it's search technique, it would be as obvious as the other 2 patents in a few years, because their technique would've been widespread. Obvious patents are just obvious because the techniques are common.

It is true that it is crazy to patent something already used across the globe... That's what is against those requests. The fact that google chooses to request a patent on their stuff while it's still new, is just common business, and common sense.

Whether such a technique should be 'rewarded' with a patent is another story.

Here in the netherlands there's a program called big brother. About 9 people started off in a house without outside communication and a lot of camaras. Every few weeks they all had to nominate 2 of the others and the public decided upon those nominations who should leave... Now they are almost on day 100 and have only a few days left until they are with the final 3. And just before the new year the public chooses a winner. On the site you can view 4 camaras... But probably this has been posted on slashdot 100 days ago... well.. for all you nosy people... here it is again :-)

And what kind of comment is this? This is, I guess, the way a lot of OS's started... Just some geeks having fun coding... Linux to name one... One that did quite ok.. And maybe we don't need this mini-OS, and maybe it's crap... But at least have some respect for their creativity. And ever heard about porting stuff?

    Just my humble opinion...
