  1. Re:Windows on Worm Hits Windows Machines Running MySQL · · Score: 1

Sure this bug alone isn't that big of an 'I told you so,' but it's an example of how products like mysql are often ported to Windows poorly. I argued for moving to a LAMP system, but I was told that mysql is mysql, so forget about it. This is an example of how mysql is not always mysql, and why your rolling the dice with mysql on windows (or anything on windows, for that matter). Oh, and by the way, I didn't really read much of the other posts, and I didn't realize that this only effects default passwords. I'm not using the default, so I guess this bug doesn't even really affect me.

  2. Re:Windows on Worm Hits Windows Machines Running MySQL · · Score: 2, Informative

I use mysql at the web shop I work for. The reason is that we're in the process of moving a legacy ASP application to LAMP, and running both PHP and ASP on the same box was SUPPOSED to be a timesaver by smoothing over the transition. I was against this idea from the beginning, arguing that mysql and php on windows were a underdeveloped compared to the linux/unix versions. Now I have a nice 'I told you so' that the managers can understand.

Now they've just got to figure out a way to strap one of those noise-reducing speakers to the missionaries that BYU keeps churning out.

I've heard this argument many times, and I have to disagree. If we abandon the album model and return to the single-based model (which is a throwback to the 50's and 60's), we're going to find ourselves with a whole lot of one hit wonders. Stick with the album format, and let the real artist release real albums filled with real songs. There have been plenty of bands out there that have come out with albums full of good songs, and there are still plenty out there now that are capable. The only problem is they all get drowned out by all the teeny-bopper crap.

  5. Good alternative to SCO license on Startup to Offer Open Source Insurance · · Score: 4, Interesting

I don't see why there is such a negative response to this post. I would bet that many if not most of the companies who paid SCO licensing fees would have opted for this deal instead, had it been available, leaving SCO with a lot less money for frivolous lawsuits. In fact, it wouldn't just take money away from SCO--it would give it to the other side. Any company offering open source insurance would have a huge financial interest in fighting a company like SCO, giving the open source movement some much need legal muscle. If insurance like this got more popular, it could seriously weaken SCO's business model.

  6. High School Counterfeiters on HP Discusses Anti-Counterfeiting Measures · · Score: 2, Funny

Reminds me about back when some students in my high school printed out phony $20 bills in the computer lab and then spent them downstairs in the cafeteria. The bills were printed in black and white on regular printer paper, which is good enough when you're dealing with lunchladies.
