The switches for the cell phone network that handles most of the calls on the other hand are in just a few locations per operator. Today it is easy to do the call handling of hundreds of thousands of simultaneous calls in a single location.
You can still route the voice data directly from cell tower to cell tower, at least with some technologies, but the benefits of doing so are not great anymore.
So I can't get my information from TV or the papers, nor can I get it from the people I meet. Instead I just have to believe that there is a significant fraction of people in the UK who do not support government censorship. Somewhere, out there, they are waiting...

However, it is one thing to notice that a species is going extinct. It is another thing to actually save it. Particularly if it means me going hungry now in the hope of more food in a year or two, food that likely goes to someone else.

I do not think that anyone has a problem with interrupt routing tables or ACPI documenting how hardware should be poked. It could be laid out a little simpler perhaps, but that is mostly bikeshedding.
One of the problems is that ACPI suddenly yanks the CPU out from under you and executes its own proprietary code, and the kernel or user space can do absolutely nothing about it.
You would move a really heavy object and measure when some other object gets affected by the changed gravity from the new position. Alas, to get a good measurement it would be handy to accelerate something with at least the mass of a planet to a small percentage of light speed.
I am sure astronomers will figure out how to use a natural event instead, but as far as I know that has not happened yet.

queazocotal has it right. ACPI prepares the hardware and tells the kernel where to find it.
Of course on recent hardware EFI is taking over part of that. EFI is significantly more bloated than traditional ACPI BIOS.

Solar energy or batteries or cellulosic biofuel are not basic research. They are very much applied research and development.
It is not just their money. They made that money with the help of society. Society has a right to share the profit.
