What I'm failing to understand here, is how some anonymous coward can repeatedly get first post when subscribers are able to view stories first? That is, assuming that the subscribers aren't clicking on the "Post Anonymously" checkbox. If that's the case then what's the point? What's the glory in getting first post if no one knows who you are?

Well... It looks like there is a sufficient amount of favorable responses posted already. You can go ahead and let your spouse read the thread. And don't forget to start looking for a better job. It shouldn't be hard. My company has openings for 100's of positions in IS right now. As a matter of fact, we're having a hard time finding qualified individuals (they must have all moved to India or something).

I would venture to say that the vast majority of the IS folks in my company have children. Let's just say that there is no shortage of Girl Scout Cookies, Candybars, etc. being sold at any given time to raise money for some child's extra-curricular activities.

I think that rather than worry about programming as a career, you need to look closely at the company for which you work. Find yourself a large bureaucratic organization where you can get yourself a cube and a steady 9-to-5 and you won't have much of a problem. Stay away from small development and software companies and move into some other field.

Not every programming job has to be so dramatic.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but if you quote another source (regardless of who or where the quote came from), you need to properly cite that source in your paper and include the appropriate references. If you look carefully at a lot of academic journals or textbooks written by professors, I think you'll find that some of them often cite and reference their own previous work.

I'll agree with the Hybrid idea, but I think a lot of people are side-stepping the obvious. The original zealot, anti-table folks rallied around the fact that using a table was a hack to get the display to layout correctly.

Now all you hear is "ooh tables are bad, all tables are bad"

    All tables are not bad

Put simply, there are times when information is best presented in a tabular format. For example, if you had a list of Cross Browser CSS Compatibility, you'd want to have a multi-column table where you have the different browsers running across the top and the different CSS options down the left column

No, tables in and of themselves are not evil. The thing that absolutely drives me mad is when someone nests one table inside another with cellpadding="1" so they get a border. That drives me nuts

What disturbs me the most about eWeek lately is the fact that every single article on Linux has those stupid M$ "GettheFUD" ads showing.

What's really funny about those ads: If you go to their site, they offer to mail you a package with the MS vs. Linux papers and a trial copy of Advanced Server 2003. Now that in itself is not funny. But the fact that the form where you enter your information was broken in every browser I tried besides IE. Nice One! If someone's not using Windows, MS doesn't let them get information on converting to Windows.

I just want to toss out the notion that the general complaint that slashdot readers don't read the article, and the slashdot effect are mutually exclusive. There were only 8 replies to this thread when I clicked the main article link, and although it wasn't completely slashdotted, it was incredibly slow coming up.

My second comment is really a question: How do we weigh this up against Mr. McBride's letters to congressmen? It seems like they would probably lean on the NSA for advice on what's secure and what's not, rather than the seemed ravings of a madman.

I would also throw out a little pointer that probably one of the major reasons that the NSA is working on the Linux Kernel is simply because they can. I'm almost certain that if they had the ability to tweak security in MS, they would do so.

Kutos to the NSA for sharing it all with us.

  13. Re:liar, liar, pants on fire on Cable Modem Hackers Release Improved Firmware · · Score: 1

No, not trolling, at least not intentionally. I understand the concept of shared bandwidth, and I think that everyone should "play nice" with their neighbors. I learned to share in kindergarten, unlike a lot of other people I know. I was more referring to the broadband bandwidth limitations that we all know are ambiguous and undocumented. I made the connection which I think a lot of people missed. The fact that a.) the broadband company obviously knows how much bandwidth you're using if they're able to send out these letters, and b.) if you uncap your cable modem, you're obviously going to be using a hell of a lot more bandwidth. There'd be no other reason to do it. So even if they can't determine whether or not you've changed you're firmware, they'll still find a way to shut you down.

One would almost hope they handle it that way, as it would skim over those few people who have upgraded the firmware for reasons other than uncapping their connection speed. Anyway, the point of my earlier post was not to say that broadband companies should get rid of bandwidth limitations... they should just disclose them. That's all. I'm not saying they're bad, I'm saying we want to know what they are.

  14. It's of no moment on Cable Modem Hackers Release Improved Firmware · · Score: 5, Insightful

It's interesting today, but it won't last. I wouldn't really bother with it. If the ISP is capping it at the modem and users find a way around it, the ISP will just figure out a way to cap it in a different place - they'll probably put the cap on the other end of the pipe where they have absolute control of the firmware/hardware.

I do think it's an interesting attack on the Cable providors who have an undocumented bandwidth limitation that they enforce. One would think that a potential benefit would be an increase in the number of people who are diconnected due to this invisible marker, and some court enforced clarification/disclosure of limitations. Sadly, the activity is obviously illegal, and therefore any potential long term gains from this kind of activity are rendered unachievable.

  15. All this talk about a new global economy on Jobs to India -- A Broad Look · · Score: 2, Insightful

One of my Co-workers and I were talking about this the other day. Truth is, we had some vendors come in who were bragging about their reduced costs due to outsourcing, and we had a teleconference with their engineers. We couldn't understand a single word they were saying. With what did filter through, we could tell we were dealing with a couple of extremely intelligent guys, but the communication gap was killing us. At the end, I just asked them to summarize everything in an email and send it to me (the email was very clear).

But the thing that we kept going back to was the way salary and cost of living were related to location. The differences even in portions of the US is extreme (the wife and I were goofing off one day and found several places in the states where we could triple the size of our house and property for the price of our current place). I just don't see the world sustaining a global economy much longer supporting these kinds of differences. Eventually, everything must begin to even out. Their cost of living and salaries are going to eventually increase and ours will drop. The burning question in my mind is... How much? Will we have significant drops as they have only minor increases, or will they have major increases and our's drops a little. I'm not so much worried about finding a job... if you really want to work, you will work. I'm just worried about those unbalanced moments when the salary has dropped and the cost of living hasn't :-/
