I have been with many hosting companies over the years. Things I have learned to look for are employee owned companies , as well as companies that are smaller , and not necessarily one of the bigger "McDonalds" type hosting companies (godaddy, hostgator, 1&1).
Companies that appreciate my business and are independent are definitely important factors that affect prices and quality of support.
