But yes, I do have PGP encryption to all my files so only I have access to them. Thanks for your concern, but if you know what you're doing, you can fix/tweak a lot of windows issues too.
Thats nice. You get the feeling of "security" and we get to access your "secret files" via our keystroke logger. I think you've failed to think your cunning plan all the way through, MacGyver...
What's massive on the scale of a University degree is a trivial side project on the scale of the industry. The OP might not have been very articulate saying it, but the problem with CS is that they do not teach you to work on existing codebase (95% of programming jobs out there) and you only work in small, mono-disciplinary team of people roughly of your skill level. That's not how it goes in the industry, where you have to work with many people, both incompetent and genius, on hacked-away codebase doing project that might last longer than you entire degree. To the defense of universities, there is not much they could do to prepare you for that.
Aye lad, thats the truth. Only on my CS projects, I did most of the work, got the A's, and figured out who I would be working with, for or not hiring at all.:) We have no slackers on our tech arch team, BTW...
I agree that the public library is *NOT* the place to be doing one's pr0n surfing, HOWEVER, I'm more than a little concerned that the dept. of homeland insecurity folks have taken it upon themselves to assume the role of nanny. I would say the DHS folks went WAY beyond their jurisdiction here. In an actionable sense, if you get my drift. Two thumbs way down.
I would be ashamed to be a *dot* net programmer. Use Debian or similiar distro, and you can get programmers from all over the world.
Meh. Shame has nothing to do with it. Feeding 3 kids, paying down a mortgage and putting gas in my Saturns has much more influence over me than your philosophical bullcrap. Shame... What Ever.
Final analysis: code is code is code. If coding for OSS projects floats your boat, then do so, Its a free world. I use Debian too, just not @ work.

The James Webb telescope is not even on the drawing board yet and will not work in visual wavelengths
I was referring to a discussion, not another project, specifically, another visual wavelength telescope on the order of Hubble. I fully agree that we need to do something to continue the work of Hubble, sooner rather than later. I pay a LOT of taxes and I'd like to see them well spent for a change!
Oddly enough, this has been part of the discussion on Hubble for quite some time. Apparently there are upgrades to a number of the modules for Hubble that could just as easily be incorporated into a new telescope for a fraction of the cost of another "rescue" mission. Of course that does not solve the issue of needing to maintain the new telescope...
The real questions are why you need to do those things in the first place and why you need to do them within a single application.
The answer is that if you do this for a living, when you save 5 minutes, 30 times a day, the money begins to add up. You do the math. Not everyone can afford to waste time and 10^5's of dollars.
more dangerous than every other group except teenagers (who also shouldn't be allowed to drive so young)
Thats why I started drive before I was a teen. By the time I was legal, I was a seasoned pro.:-) Of course, these weren't city streets, mud bogging and farm driving probably don't count, except for the fact that they were real trucks, cars, tractors, etc. Not sure I would let my kids do the same...
On the other hand, I hope I have the grace and intelligence to hang up my keys when the time comes.
I have issues with being called hoity-toity for liking Stewart. I consider myself more of a culturally snobbish liberal jackass:-) But thanks for asking...
The fact it has a reputation as a possible IE-killer will aid it a lot.
Agreed. I believe that Firefox still needs something more than that to get the "critical density" it needs to become the majority browser. I'm not sure what that is, but I'm willing to do my part, if only to stick it to a certain monopoly I won't mention by name...:-)
Opera was around during the original browser wars but was never a serious contender (in terms of market share). What makes you think it is a serious contender now?
I'm no Opera Fan, but I have to point out the logical fallacy here (which, by the way the people who marked this guy insightful should read): Product A had no market share at some point in time. Support your argument that it should have more market share now.
Can you see how easily that same argument can be turned against your favorite browser? I believe the term is non sequitur. Get a better argument. One based on facts would be good.
Really, what use could terrorists make of such outages, except for perhaps a very tentative prediction?
Obviously you have no training in electronic warfare (not that I would expect that from the average/. user)... I very much doubt any agency would want to jam any given communication given that interception is a thousand times more valuable.
Be glad you just got a few intense storms. They were a little more powerful here in central Florida. We're still in shock. Its a weird feeling being told to make backups because your building may not be there after the hurricane (4 times in 6 weeks). In many cases that prediction came true, but thankfully not for my own place of business and home. Six days ago I was watching the trees blow sideways and wondering if my roof was in any shape to stay on after 2 near misses and several feet of rain. Storm indeed!
Programming is like sex... make one mistake, and support it the rest of your life.
I beg to differ - programming is exactly the opposite of sex. Make one mistake & it will support you for the rest of your life - it terms of maintenance work, bugfixing work etc.
More like make one mistake and your successor will be supporting your work for the rest of their life...

I'm sensing a lot of pent up hostility here. Get out the strawmen and have a great time. I call shenanigans....
I said that 5 years ago and I still seem to have about the same amount of principle on my student loan I did 5 years ago...

We used to dream about ones! Would have been a paradise to us. No we had it hard. All us 10 kids had to share a zero between us.

Actually, you could potentially end up slashdotting the tracker.
Doesn't seem to have done that in this case. I'm getting excellent throughput...

How in the world can something totatlly disable a browser's features like that?
Meh. The real question is: "how do I get around it?" CTRL-ALT-PRT SC comes to mind.
Somehow, I doubt you have any training in electronic warfare either...
