"Wow. The truth really bothers you, huh? Too bad for you - but I'm sure you and the rest of your hippie-commie friends will keep fighting the good fight. Some day more than a few hundredths of a percent of the world will care, I just know it, so keep it up!"
How the world is and how the world should be are two very different things. People like you only take the current shit in hopes that one day you'll be the one doing the shitting. Caring about your fellow human beings is not a bad thing...
That's a little different than what these people want and what I was talking about. Everything NC-17 and under is industry regulated in the movie industry... Hardcore Porn and gratuitus footage of actual death is no where near what we've seen in games. I don't really agree they should be gov't regulated either. Children should be taught right from wrong and then be allowed to make their own decisions...
Not only is it not the solution it's unfair. There is no government regulation on which movies you can watch. It is an industry (and society) dictated rating system with no government involvement. How many of our freedoms do we have to give away before people realize what our nation is becoming?
You need to go work retail for a couple years (maybe fast food too)...deal with corporate bosses, then maybe you'll have some insight into how the world should be rather than what your TV has programmed you to believe. Every thing you have said on the page is worthless and you are a complete asshole. Have fun in hell...
An even worse fate...I'd wish working at EA on no one, not even the management positions b/c even though they might make more money, who wants to deal with all the guilt of screwing over both your employees and your customers? There are many things much more important than money, like self respect for example.
If that's true then I should have no idea who Stephen Speilberg or George Lucas are...but I do. The people behind the scenes are just as important, if not more, than the actors on screen whether or not the audience knows who they are or not. Actor's celebrity is a created thing by the media... whoever they focus on can become one. Same goes for games...
I don't know where you get your info, but not all programmers are created equal. Even if 75% of the coders on a game are just replaceable code monkeys...the lead programmer(s) are not. There's a reason they're put in charge of more code, and generally the design of that code. Programming is a problem solving skill, and not everyone is good as each other when it comes to that. The graphics guys are even less replaceable. If you want your games to have real charm and character...you'll want very talented artists designing, modelling, texturing and animating your main characters. Sure, items and backdrops can be delegated to more "replaceable" artists, but what are you going to see more often throughout whole game?
My point is these guys are artists and performers too. To be a good animator you have to have a good sense of your own motions. It's not something just anyone can pick up and master. The voice actors however are more replaceable b/c if they all go on strike you can just go to your local college theater dept. and find some kids willing to work harder and for less than these big stars and whatnot.
What needs to happen is for everyone to get paid less actually. Here's my reasoning... If everyone gets paid less, there is less of an investment cost. Since the producers have put less money into the project they deserve less. Now you take the profits and split them 50/50. Half goes back to the investors + their investment costs, then the other half gets divied up between all the developers based on how important their work was and how much they did. In the long run the developers can possibly make much more money than they were by being paid less up front. It's a risk, but so is life...
"Nope...no DRM. These chips do however offer our new "DRP" technology...aka...Digital Rights Prevension, 'cause let's face it...you guys don't deserve any."
I'm not.... From what I've been shown by my friend who is, people just have big virtual orgies there... Does a game really need the ability to customize your character's dick size?
That's great unless they start sticking advertisements all over the place with it...

Which sys you talking about? Sony's "looking unlikely" (ie..rumor) and MS has already said long ago they were gonna have three tier system for the 360 (one w/o hd) and Nintendo announced the 512MB thing...just to clear things up:)
Well that's their problem....they're charging too much.... If they charged a reasonable price, businesses would be more than willing to pay it for the services aspect. Does CentOS have a 24 hour tech support number?
I really think Red Hat's focus is just about where it should be....You release Red Hat Personal (Fedora) for free and then you sell Red Hat Enterprise along with services to businesses...then use the same developers and code base.....I really wish someone in the Gentoo community would take this to heart.
Ya know I've been seeing this quite alot recently...I'm starting to wonder if it's a bug in Slashdot rather than people just replying to comments with completely different topics...
Whether or not the "mass market" still buys PC games I can't really say...but I know developers will keep making games for them. Why? Because small/independent developers can't afford the SDKs and licensing fees/royalties required to make a console game. If you ever want to play anything new or original, you'll need a PC. If all you want to do is play Madden and Halo, then you'll probably just want a console...
The built in HD on the Xbox was the main selling point for me... It was great to have friends come over and say "Make as many save files as you want" b/c there was no chance in hell you'd fill it up with just saves. As while if I played someone's PS2 I'd always need to ask them if there was enough room for me to save on their card...
Well, the upside for Xbox is that all the 360's will include a hd at launch, and probably for the rest of this year too... Most likely they won't even start selling the HD-less edition until next year when they're trying to drop their price to compete with the PS3 more.

By not including a harddrive built in, this is the problem they put themselves in. The industry has proven time and time again that if it's a peripheral and not built in or at least bundled it's not going to get used very much in actual games. This was the reasoning behind the dreamcast coming with a built in modem and the xbox coming with a built in ethernet and harddrive. MS seems to be screwing up in this dept too with the option of buying a system w/o a drive. I could see selling a "basic model" with a 10 gig and then let people buy bigger ones as needed, but to release (both Xbox360 and PS3) without one is going to discourage many developers from taking advantage of it. At least the first wave of launch Xbox360's will all have a harddrive included.
The other question is what happened to the harddrive Nintendo damn near guarenteed us would be built into the Revolution? 512MB of flash memory does not sound like a harddrive to me... not unless youre running a 486 system or something:P
I am very happy about the use of "standard" SD Flash cards instead of proprietary memory cards all around... Still, a harddrive should be cheaper than a flash memory card ($75 for a 1GB flash or $75 for an 80GB HD), so I don't even see why they're releasing them....

"when did it become their job to discount every allegation just to make some folks happy?"
The day they started selling chips to their customers.
Now that you mention it... "do[es] not have unannounced DRM technology" Could easily be interpreted as it's still there and it is announced.

I was talking more about the theory than what they've actually done I guess.... I'm a gentoo user myself :P
Well that tripe wasn't completely untrue....the PC market now is only about half the size it was around the time Xbox was released :(
