    because:

    a) windows 2000 is still supported (upgrades are available), yet microsoft will say XPSP2 is the patch for windows 2000 (its like saying the linux 2.4 series kernel is outdated software)

    b) not everybody can migrate to SP2 because their software isn't compatible - to those people linux would be just as suitable to them to fix the problem, compared with SP2

    i didn't have a spare computer, and last time i installed gentoo, i wanted to do it by the (quick install) book. Next time, i'l be installing it from within a different distro (i switched from slackware last time).

    Its not as bad as people make out though.

    so your saying nasa couldn't afford the licenses for irix, hpux, windows (!!), etc? if the software would have given them more stability, scalability or speed, sgi/nasa would have chosen it, but they chose linux because they decided it was the best. i very much doubt nasa would have bought hardware like that and put software on it that they did not think was the best for the task.

    fool.

    its not that painful, infact, the universal install (x86) cd includes frame buffer drivers, so you can use links just like a gui browser. it takes a while to finish, but you can browse the net in 16 bit colour, and like i did, use e-messenger.net to talk to my friends on msn messenger.

    i upgraded kde from within kde (emerge sync ; ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge -u kde), which allowed me to continue as i was, until i had to restart the x server to use the new kde once it had finished.

    unless several different (as in programmed separately, by different people) programs are developed, which vote on a strategy - this way, the chances of human error are reduced greatly (unless there's a bug in the vote counting program, but then there's the possibility of redundant clean-house voting programs, which would also suffer from the same problem.

    hmm, talking bollocks on slashdot is too complicated for me - i'l leave the future of the world in the hands of people like bill gates and [insert other mediocre programmers/good buisiness men here]

    there's aways the german stereotype (which my parents agree with) - they get up at 6am, put a towel on a sun lounger and go back to bed (so its theirs)

    but i personally hate spanish tourists - they are the loudest race of people in the world (shared a bar with some this summer)

    i live in england, and i finished my btec national diploma last year (course for 16-18 year olds) - we did pascal in the first semester (argh!) fortunately, i got through it by knowing my tutor would protect the class from french invasion.

    wouldn't that be possible by just amending the header files?

    infact,(if it could be done,) it could be done in GCC, a few months after, no new programs (compiled by gcc) would have buffer overflows.

    im probably wrong though, as usual

    evolution has rss tied in, its nice. opera also has rss tied in (i think its nicer in opera, because its just a panel, click it to open a new window in the program your already running).

    i get the latest /. headlines using rss in opera - try it.

    if its for single user machines, why does it purposly bypass security and scan for other users?

    anyway, it probably only runs on IE anyway (i didn't rtfa), so one more piece of spyware isn't going to hurt now is it?

    i setup windows XP for my dad last week on his new computer. I said to my sister "im going now, download mozilla firefox, and install it right now, before you go on the internet, and dont use internet explorer for anything other than firefox"

    I left, went camping for the weekend, came back. the computer was so slow (AthlonXP 2800, 512mb ram), as was the 150k internet connection, that adaware couldn't help, and i couldn't even get to the spybot homepage. i reinstalled and made sure firefox was installed and default myself before i left.

    the moral of the story is:

    a) dont trust a woman to do anything with a computer that isn't playing the sims
    b) install firefox and set it as default before you leave
    c) dont build computers for other people (especially family), as they expect technical support

    since it doesn't have crappy software you can do some cool stuff with it, for example my usb mp3 player doesn't have any crap software with it and i can carry firefox and putty round with me in my pocket, so i dont have to download them at every damn machine at college, and it just runs from the device

    its also nice to beable to use the software that your used to (konqueror or xterm) to copy the music too.

    did you ever own a netmd player from sony? have a look on the sony website for sonic or something like that.

    But i suppose i keep my mp3's in an orderly fashion ( /music/$band/$album/$number - $band - $song.$extention ), but this can be set easily in any good ripping software.
