I think digital distribution is perfect for MMO pay per foo, but thats mostly because i find the concept of paying for paying for a game, and then paying to actually using it, insane. but thats just me.
they also have the advantage ( IIRC ) that they can sell unix boxen and OS indefinetly without owing a lick to SCO or whoever currently owns unix. This alone is worth a fair amount if sun bites it hard enough to get themselves purchased.
yeah, i upgraded it. and i don't think i'll never need a workaround (although at some point i anticipate apple doing the whole "unless you upgrade your OS for 130 bucks you can't get the latest versions of this software" like they did with safari. my main point was that they're forcing the upgrade via incompatibility -- i have no problem upgrading, but i was pointing it out for everyones benefit.
Except you didn't have to give them a credit card to get the songs. I didn't have to put in any credit card informtaion until i actually bought a track -- after i had downloaded 18 free iTunes songs. So yes, they were actually free. You only needed to give them an email addy to create the account (or at least I did, but i used the account i'd had with apple for 2 years, so they already had my email).
20 minutes out of NYC (in jersey) i managed to get 18 pepsi caps, and another of my friends found 40. For me, it took until about halfway through the first month of the promotion, since the vendors i get soda from usually don't restock as often as a real store or soda machine.
my main problem with 4.5 is that it no longer allowed sharing with other itunes running boxen on my home network - the one machine i had updated to 4.5 ( my parents imac) couldn't accesss my music on the g5. it seems like a fairly annoying thing that wouldn't be particularly hard to not break for no particular reason. while i personally think theres no reason to break apple's authentication or other security features in itunes (the current permisions are more than enough for me, and i have less than 20 pruchased tracks, and only 2 machines i play em on), its nice to know that work arounds do exist.

NJIT (New Jersey Inst of Tech) has something similar to this in place, and has for this most resent semester. we get around it by zipping the files or modifying the suffixes.
Due to the military's blatant use of water and air, i have decided to, as a stand against oppresion and Bush's agenda of oil, stop using both. this will, in all likelyhood, be my last slashdot comment.::holds breath::::falls over:: asjdhflaksjdhfoiausydf9-8qwefijsndflakjndclkajd
The problem is that independant flicks don't make it to the big cinemas that most people go to. I'm lucky enough to live close enough to new york that i can hit indie theaters, but the dozen theaters around me play nothing but mainstream pap (like kill bill. god that was a great movie). Similarly, indie record labels don't get the shelf space or radio play that big labels do, so they're less easily accessed.
pretty much anyone who likes making money. insurers don't want to cover those in high risk flood areas, but the federal government makes em (at least in the states). what insurer in their right (and unforced by retarded laws) insure someone in an area that floods regularly, or gets hit by hurrivanes on a yearly basis. so thats not really a great metaphor for much of anything.
I would view it as paying to support these people who, presumably of their own volition, went through the whole damn kernel just to make sure that its free of unpleasant copyright problems. on the other hand, there are probably businesses that would like some sort of liability insurance for peace of mind, but would prefer to avoid SCO ating like a bully trying to steal their lunch money.
In my experience, apple has the best hardware support ( of course, thats because they know almost everything you'll have in your box. but i've never had any trouble with 3rd party addons - but i'm mostly a mac user), followed by linux, windows (XP. 2k slightly less so. but both lack some important things), and lastly BSD. I'm talking out-of-the-box support for your hardware, not "i spent 2 weeks tweaking, but i can finally use my scanner".
I've never had problems with my old sound blaster lives, but my sound cards with toslink or spidf sometimes have a little trouble - but fiddling in device manager usually makes it work out OK in the end. The only real sound issue i've had is wwith blue g3 macs (blah blah blah), where somehow, even yellowdog can't use the internal speaker (but the headphones work ok). But in general, linux has been able to handle almost anything i've thrown at it, even (is anyone really suprised) things that win2k or XP pro can't grok.
If/when they're ported to OS X. I play fallout 2, halo, and jedi knights 2 all the time on my mac -- but i built a PC so i could play GTA:VC . Jedi KNights II ran fine on my 700 mHz g3 ibook, as did fallout 2. Tony Hawk Pro Skater's minimum requirements are higher than my laptop, but it runs fine on the g5.::shrug:: I'd love to be able to play doom 3 and half like 2 on my mac, i'm just not going to hold my breath, and probably'll give up and get it for my windows boxen.
yeah, i went back and saw that, and made a new comment. i have no idea why this comment got modded up to interesting when it was wrong, but my other post corerecting it didn't. oh well.
The g5 is the newer (much hotter) proc. Apple has finally phased out the g3 entirely (the iBooks were the last g3 based computer that apple sold), and now the g4 is the 'low end' processor. Apple's done a good job never having more than 2 proc architectures out on the market at the same time - i'm sure eventually apples crafty engineers will sell enough souls to gain the divine wisdom needed to make a g5 laptop that doesn't singe your pubes. and then we'll have the g6, which will be a tiny goad.
Actually, when i looked at the actual facts, the lower end card is only in the 12 inch PowerBook, which is always feature poor in comparison to the 15 and 17 inch (crappier video card, 100 base thernet instead of gigabit, only firewire 400m mini DVI out instead of DVI and S-Video out, backlit keyboard, etc). And if you think you're going to be playing doom 3 or half life 2 on it in a few months time, can i borrow your magic time machine? i'd look to go to the lunar amusement park next week.
I think that, because apple has far less inventory than, say, dell, they manage to clear out the old stock pretty well with EOL. On the other hand, if i remember, i think you can get old-new hardware if you're part of a MUG (but i'm really not positive).
Ummm... i assume thats why they're offering the higher end video card - to those few dedicated mac gamers, or those who do graphics work. but they offer a lower end card so a general user doesn't have to pay for something they really don't need. this is, as far as i recall, the first time that apple has offred a video card option in its laptops.

YOu can still get 32's of brand new pc100. but i don't think i've seen any DDR at less that 64, and rarely less than 128

Gentoo (i believe) has a fully 64 bit linux flavor for the g5. but i've yet to go out and dual boot my g5 yet.
