  2. Y2K is a minor issue in nuke plants on Some Nuke Plants Still Have Y2K Bugs · · Score: 1

As I've said before when appropriate, Y2K doesn't really affect the critical part of the plant--the core. That's a self-contained unit with hard-wired controls for activation/deactivation (push a button and the rods go up or down to change the neutron flux). The systems that will be affected are the external systems...and those are usually non-critical (like computers used to operate the fuel-loading procedures).

I was interested to see the Farley plant mentioned as one that is behind on the testing...it belongs to the Southern Company and is operated by its subsidiary Alabama Power. Given the recent PR campaign, I would've figured that they would get all the Y2K issues out of the way long before time was up...you really don't want to break your arm patting yourself on your back about what a good job you do, then have to own up to the public that they've been paying for power they didn't receive because the plant had to be shut down...

OK, so you pay based on the meter, but my point is still the same... ;)

Mark is currently using a rather cute logo for the gaim client. It used to feature the AIM logo with the AIM man hugging a penguin. Now, the AIM symbol and man are cut out with a punch-out shadow on white where they used to be and a message stating that AOL was rather unhappy about the use of the logo.

I can understand why AOL objected...it's obciously a trademark issue as far as they're concerned, but Mark's client wa actually a good thing...it's not like he was defaming them, and he certainly wasn't in the business of making profits off their logo.

I have to agree that a new logo is needed. If my graphics skills were up to it, I'd volunteer (having gotten enough linux support from him that I can't possibly repay him ;) ). While you're at it, the gaim team is also looking for a reasonable demon image for the client to satisfy the *bsd users.

Net junkies interact. Boob tubers don't. When you've seen the same Geiko commercial a dozen times in an hour and the same shows on Discovery/History Channel/A & E that were on last year, or the year before that, or the year before that ...., and the other new programming is mindless drivel, your mind seeks an escape to something less difficult than being productive but more stimulating than the jello-mold-cum-TV set. 12. Get a Palm III on Palm IIIe Announced · · Score: 1

As the owner of a III, anda college student, I can tell you that it will be more than adequate. I have almost all my notes for this quarter typed on it (with a GoType keyboard), several personal memos, a reasonable-sized address book, calendar appointments reaching all the way back to February (almost daily), a large number of games, a financial calculator, and a draw program, all stored in 2 megs, and I still haven't filled a third of my memory. Don't sweat the extra megs. If you ever really need them (like if you're planning on running palm linux or PalmVNC), then you can always get a memory card. The screen on the III isn't quite as crisp as the one on the IIIx in odd lighting, but the icons, as someone previously mentioned, are much more natural on the III than on the IIIx. As for the IIIe, it sounds like a IIIx minus 2 megs of memory and some other features. I've seen the V in stores, and invariable the buttons on it are mashed while its cousins the Pilot, III, and IIIx are in great shape. The Pilot, of course is outdated, so don't buy one unless you're really short on cash (it lacks infrared). Finally, the VII. The VII is OK if you want to pay hefty wireless charges and want a Palm that's an inch longer than standard. If the wireless is that important, get a III. I saw a wireless adaptor for the III in this month's PC Mag. Hope that helps ;)

  15. Building codes on Red Hat West Coast Division? · · Score: 1

I agree that California has excellent building codes. After moving back to the southeast, I went around for months looking at buildings thinking "that would never pass earthquake standards." However, we both know that the codes alone are no guarantee of building safety. Two examples come to mind. The first is the freeway in San Francisco that pancaked the top level onto the bottom level. The second is Northridge Meadows (since rebuilt under a different name). Neither one survived earthquakes, although I heard rumors that the Northridge quake was really a 9.something that was automagically adjusted down by the government so that FEMA wouldn't have to pay out as much (even though FEMA still got seriously scammed). My point is that personal risk is a matter of taste. If the sky gets dark, I can look at the weather channel and see if a tornado is coming. If I go curl up in a depression or a closed space without windows, I'll be OK. With a hurricane, I have days or weeks lead time before the thing hits. With an earthquake, I know when it hits. The first few times, it was unnerving. After a while, I got to where I didn't even notice the 3.somethings, although there was a 3.4 that made me think someone had drive a car into the apartment. Granted, I lived in the San Fernando valley from 94-96, so there was no major activity, but that doesn't provide much reassurance after hearing stories about TVs flying across the room at shoulder-level ;)

  16. Disasters are relative on Red Hat West Coast Division? · · Score: 1

California may be at risk for earthquakes, but here in the southeast, we're at risk for tornadoes and hurricanes. Dad works periodically with GE and said that when they moved a bunch of their employees to North Carolina from San Jose, California, many of them were absolutely terrified of the thunder and lightning, let alone tornadoes and hurricanes. Having also lived in California, I have to say that the lack of a tornado threat is a little more reassuring (Who wants to get picked up by 100 mile-per-hour winds?), but the thought of having your office building come down around you without warning is just as bad. I'd rather deal with the tornadoes and hurricanes, of course (you usually get some warning that they are coming), but some people would rather deal with the risk of being squashed by steel and concrete. I guess it's a matter of preference, but avoiding California just because of the earthquakes doesn't mean a whole lot....

  21. That's not necessarily true... on David Brin Responds to Star Wars Issues · · Score: 1

He states that human rights, international law, freedom of speech, etc. are not necessarily the province of western government. Consider American government (oh, I am a US Citizen (born & raised)). We have this supposed checks and balances system to prevent the government from depriving us of our rights (remember the "due process" clause?).

Would a government that upholds human rights deprive its citizens of land, of wealth, of their own lives without due process? Ours does. Don't believe me? We have "environmental impact" laws that forbid construction activity in an area because of "endangered species" even when those species are thriving or don't even live in the area. We have the RICO law which allows the FBI to seize anything you own even on the suspicion that you are doing something illegal--and they don't always return it either. Ask people suspected of cracking if they got their computers back even when it was proved that they were innocent. We have the careless disregard for life and property shown by the ATF and FBI. Remember Waco? Remember Ruby Ridge? I don't agree with what those folks believed in, but what they were doing wasn't necessarily illegal.

Ever hear what happened to the Mormons in the mid 1800's, courtesy of the US goverment which you so proudly hold up as a model to the world? The government drove them out of the US, refused to answer their cries for mercy as the citizens of Missouri and Illinois deprived them of life, liberty, and happiness. The government sent Johnstone after them with an army on false reports of sedition, and his soldiers did all sorts of cruel things to them.

What about the treatment of black people in this country by the US government? Abraham Lincoln might have "freed the slaves," but the "Emancipation Proclamation" only freed slaves in rebelling states--not loyal ones. There are more examples, if time would permit.

Don't get me wrong--I would still rather live here in the US and have the privileges of Citizenship here, but it isn't perfect, and just because it has the "western-style democracy" that you are so excited about does not in any way mean that it necessarily is more predisposed to human rights. Our politicians may spend a lot of time talking about human rights, but talk does not usually equate to action in our political system, as you well know.

To say that having a democratic system implies a greater degree of human rights and freedoms is a logical fallacy. It may be true in some cases, but it will not necessarily hold true in all cases, and it is conceivable that other forms of government if managed well could provide an equal or better degree of these freedoms than ours does.
