If you're using legit adobe software that costs hundreds or in some case thousands of dollars, what the fuck do you care if you spend 100$ more on windows ?
Because both Windows and OS X, the two platforms on which Creative Suite is available, have multiple issues surrounding effective ownership and control of the computer. The future of both operating systems seems to be a both a dumbing down and locking up of the computer hardware and software. Many people would love to have a Linux version of CS to escape from having to deal with those issues. Adobe is bad enough by themselves, thank you very much.
However, I don't see this as a likely development in the near term.
If you watch some of the Big Dog videos 'in the field', they seem to be using a rather noisy gas motor to power the thing. Looked like maybe a 10 - 20 hp Honda industrial motor from a couple of views - that's a lot of gasoline (equivalents) to be shipping to Mars. Of course, if you were to develop a Martian Dog that was designed for lower gravity, perhaps lower speed but optimized for power use and say, climbing (and durability) it might be a reasonable design.
However, the Dogs are still pretty new. I doubt JPL would change the game so dramatically in the near future. If we don't kill NASA completely, perhaps our kids will see it.

Can we get off of fossil fuels without crashing civilization as we know it? That's a very interesting question. Theoretically we can. We have the technology to create energy from much safer sources. Any practical chance of this happening?
Look at the Big Dog videos - even the ones from several years ago showed them being pushed down on ice and having them recover. The problem with putting them on Mars is the same problem putting them in the battlefield - they're power pigs. Wheels have been chosen for the Mars rovers because they're very efficient on mostly flattish terrain.
First Garry Kasparov, then Ken Jennings, and (soon) Usain Bolt. Sure, Albert Einstein or Leonardo Da Vinci or Mahatma Gandhi may be beyond robotic capabilities for quite a while yet, but you'd think that we could start replacing congressmen with much better robotic equivalents soon.

Go look at pictures of the VAB (Vehicle Assembly Building - no, you find the links). The largest indoor space in the world. So you'd like to immolate it every time you launched a rocket? Sounds even more expensive than the crawler transporter.
Just as a point of argument, there ARE other ways to do this sort of thing. The Russians like to put things together on the ground and then lift the entire mess up. I'm sure there were spirited discussions on the pros and cons of doing this in the 60's but this way certainly has been quite flexible.

A phone with a video camera and link to some analysis software (or, heaven forbid, a real person) would work fine. Do this once a month or so - say when the kids show up. Probably a lot easier than the high tech carpet.
Hell, 30 seconds of walking in front of a physical therapist would get you the same info.
The 'I've fallen and I can't get up' problem is probably better answered by a bracelet / fob whatever that has an accelerometer, perhaps a pulse meter and a wireless or whatever connection. To use a floor mat to determine whether granny is alive seems complicated.
I think that is the attraction of these devices - having someone of minimal experience download a file, stick in some spools of plastic and print a gun, but I doubt that this is going to represent a functional reality. And yes, I have a CNC machine in my basement / cave / study - a little Sherline based unit that could easily make a small gun. Of course, I'm not exactly normal but then again, the guy with a fully functional 3D printer isn't much better....
And yeah, I think a big part of the buzz here is exactly what fff said - people who aren't thinking about this in much detail and who don't have much generic experience in current fabrication methods getting all Star Trek about what is likely to be available next month.
