So when can I start using my iPad during "all phases of the flight"?
The big issue is not the electronic part, but the 'it hurts if it hits you on the head' part. iPads, iPhones, Galaxy whatevers can be nice little missiles in the event of a crash. Of course, a hardback book is gonna hurt if tossed at you 50 mph so the current regs aren't all that logically consistent.
I read somewhere and too lazy to look it up, that the FAA is considering lowering the 'cabin electronics are OK' altitude to 5000 feet. Tell your kids, they might get to see it someday.
Much of the "green revolution" occurred because of extra energy input in the form of oil. Cheap oil allowed for the expansion of nitrogen fertilizer, pesticides and mechanical harvesting. While the last two don't use an enormous amount of oil, the first does. As fossil fuels become more expensive, so does nitrogen based fertilizer.
So there is likely a limit to the ability of said revolution to feed the planet. And I'm ignoring other potential limiters such as water, salinization of croplands and many others.
A curated app^Hadvertising store. That's what is going to be the big added feature.
Lots of parents won't have the time nor inclination to lock and iPad or a generic Android pad down. At least that's what they're hoping. And in doing so, they open up the definition of 'customer'. You have both the parent that bought the device AND the advertiser that is buying space in the 'app' store.
We're rolling out an EHR (electronic health record). Although the vendor supports iPads and 'hopes' to support Android tablets in the near future, we're not going the iPad route. Not because of administration but precisely because they're too popular. We think it's just going to be too easy to walk off with them.
Yes, you can lock it down so no patient info could be compromised, but the issue is a perception that it's an iPad and therefore desirable / fenceable. We're not in the financial position to be able to supply the town with iPads. I'm hoping that we can get a 7" generic Android tablet that runs the the data entry part of the application.
So, there are other valid reasons for wanting something other than a nice, shiny iPad....
They're just doing this now because manufacturers have found that the only people with the eyesight and dexterity to handle microSD cards are 7 year olds.

Woops. Forgot you took your Adderall this morning and doubled up on the dose? Shouldn't do that.
Either that or look at the screen carefully when you're posting from your iPhone. That autocorrect is a bitch sometimes.
The cloud is the most permanent and robust source of information that humanity has ever devised.
It's a just a little mind boggling that you can call something that is perhaps 50 years old 'permanent and robust'. Especially when it relies on continual functioning of an enormously complex pile of multiple technologies which require the most advanced technical and social system ever cobbled together by humans.
Those who do not understand history are doomed to repeat it.
- Purchasing large quantities of ammunition, hydrogen peroxide (check the infirmaries), model aircraft fuel, compressed fuels. - Unusually large quantities of fertilizer (well, not so sure about that one, but maybe they are teaming up with the Department of Agriculture). - Large quantities of watches, electronic items - have you seen all the electronic gizmos that the DOD orders? - A combination of unusual items - describes every military base I've ever seen - Firearms and ammunition out of season - ditto. - Night vision and camouflage equipment - double ditto; they have the very best night vision stuff, totally jealous. - Pipe - I'll bet that the average military base orders thousands of feet of pipe (and pipe nipples) every year; do they tell you what they are going to use it for?
We'd better alert the Department of Homeland Security!
Not much on the moon of any use. Mining stuff anywhere off earth is a long way from being practical. If you want to build a transfer station, do it in orbit (like LEO, just what the ISS is doing).
Personally, I'd like us to spend more money and time on the Jovian satellites but then again, I'd like NASA to get to spend more money - lots more money. At the current piddly rate we're funding space exploration, you really can't expect to be able to pull off any major exploration goal. Right now we're just doing simple and cheap things (relatively speaking) and hoping that the funding situation gets better.
You can certainly argue all day about whether or not it's an appropriate goal for a country, but you're not going to get very far with the nickel and dime approach we're currently using. Not that JPL isn't doing neat science - and given the financial limitations that they work in, they've done a fantastic job, it's just to really answer a lot of the questions we are posing and to enable us to even think about pulling resources from space, we're not doing jack.
Seriously - maybe they bought used components or are just ripping off the design to stay relevant?
My thoughts as well. Bear in mind that the Soyuz TMA is probably the most successful manned space craft ever. More of them have flown than anything else combined. They power the manned programs of Russia, China and India.
Well, for one thing you posit that Obama 'socialized our healthcare system'. By that statement, you make it abundantly clear that you have no earthly idea what you are talking about.
Oh, now that I see your sig 'Socialism is slavery' I begin to understand. But you clearly, don't.

So is the aircraft, come to think of it.....
95% of Canada, eh? And just what sort of crops does one grow in tundra?
Mosquitoes of course. Not exactly a 'crop' but tasty, crunchy critters

Two years of freeze dried foods and Meals Ready to Eat and you will be rioting even with a full stomach.
And with an 'L'!
(Don't you hate that?)

Now, if only Apple had thought of that.....

You're forgetting the fact that it was Obama's fault all along.

Natalie Portman.
Covered in, well, nothing.
Wait. I thought that was Comic Sans.
What makes you think we aren't, citizen?
According to TFA, the Military are terrorists -
- Purchasing large quantities of ammunition, hydrogen peroxide (check the infirmaries), model aircraft fuel, compressed fuels.

Perhaps you should read less Ayn Rand and concern yourself more with reality.
Perhaps this is what they're trying for - some twisted world in which Ayn Rand makes sense.

So where are the ancient Martian cities? The radioactive craters? The garbage?
If there was a civilization capable of destroying the ecosystem, I think you'd see it given the multiple, high resolution surveys we've done.
Don't even bother with that. EMACS clearly wins.
I'm not so sure I like the idea of a 7 year old opening a desktop machine with mains voltages available.
Unless it's a dedicated battery system (say a Raspberry Pi) I would not allow a 7 year old unfettered access to any hardware. Too dangerous.
If the goal is to teach a kid about basic electronics / logic or similar, the Lego Mindstorm sounds like a much better idea.
Seriously - maybe they bought used components or are just ripping off the design to stay relevant?

Sort of the AK-47 of the space capsule world.
Hey mods, this isn't flamebait. Crazy, perhaps, but not flamebait.
Please try to avoid using that mod so much.
I can always tell the difference between organic and inorganic food. The inorganic food is always either gritty or metallic.
How to break this gently?
You're not eating the packaging, are you?
