    average home size was 1000 sq ft in the 1970s. needing a McMansion before you breed is a myth sold to dumb suckers by the US real estate builder industry.

    No one is obligated to breed kids for the good of the country. If women want to work, eat, pray, love whatever, it's their business -- you can't choose others' path in life for them.

    Or just encourage part-time work for one or both parents. 30 hr a week can be more easily be made to coincide with time kids spend in school/pre-school/kindergarten.

    National insurance, lower the fixed costs of employment benefits by socializing them, require employers to provide parental/vacation leave.

    Maybe the ecahhhhnamy needs to be restructured so it can function even without continuous growth, sprawl, and environmental depredation.

    Yep. Reasonable working hours, parental leave, sick/personal days, vaca time, so people actually have TIME to care for their families.

    State/city college is cheap -- in NY, CUNY/SUNY are great and basically free if family income is less than $120,000/yr. Ivy-league schools are better for grad/pre-professional (i.e. law/med school) anyway, not for undergrad.

    This goes for many states with a good public uni system -- NY, NJ, PA, Maryland, CA, MA.

    Except that you smell weed being smoked openly in whiter areas like the UES all the time, and the cops ignore it. Enforcement is not even at all.

    The buildings are co-ops -- they don't have to approve hipsters. i.e., the building's board has a choice whom to sell to or not. Plus, there are anti-investment-property policies in place, like prohibitions on rental for a profit.

    125% (actually 120%) is a maximum cap, not a minimum income to buy. So people at lower incomes do also buy.

    Correlation isn't causation. Many physically demanding jobs (fireman, mechanic, building trades) involve more exposure to toxic chemicals than other jobs.

    You build them for sale. Sale requires a buyer no more than 125% of income for a given neighborhood. But once the buyer buys, their income can go up without them being kicked out. HDFC program in NYC does this.

    Amazon isn't going to actually leave. Low-tax states don't attract intelligent, educated people. When was the last time you heard someone saying that they really, really want to move to Oklahoma or Arkansas when they finish school. People actually like having amenities ... paid for by (OMG!) taxes. Funny how that works.

    If the economy generally slows down and they have to move for work, they'll either have to rent their home (increasing housing stock), sell short, or go into foreclosure. All of which will push down market prices, especially if 30y mortgage rates hit 5-6%.

    C'mon, Jeffie, leave Seattle. Dare 'ya. Double-dog dare 'ya. Go already. If Amazon left, there would still be tech and engineering firms in Seattle, but a lot of hot money would pull out of housing. Which would actually help the goal of affordability.

    Securus doesn't bother checking for a warrant, so we could be talking about stalking victims, domestic violence victims, persons of interest to foreign intelligence agencies, anyone who anyone else wants to spy on.

    Not that I particularly care for even police with a lawful purpose having that kind of power to track people -- a lot of "crimes" in the US shouldn't be crimes at all.

    why blame the poor house? it can provide a roof over decent human beings' heads. far better if the company goes under and the owners get foreclosed. maybe someone will buy it and turn it into a halfway house for people the previous owners helped railroad...

    Hope he left some Cryptolocker behind after siphoning their data and jerking their pants off in public. Between charging prison inmates exorbitant rates to call their families and giving anyone who asks cell phone location data (without verifying the veracity of a warrant), Securus is a truly predatory company. The US wouldn't lose anything if they went under tomorrow.
