Problem is that they're allowing telcos to drop ALL fixed-line (copper OR fiber) service in certain locations. And wireless is only a good alternative if you like random slowdowns, high latency, and generally shit service.
They're talking about fiber too. Instead of requiring telcos to either rebuild copper or upgrade to fiber, they allow telcos to go wireless-only, forcing crappy-yappy mobile internet on customers. The issue isn't landlines, it's also the availability of fast, reliable, consistent fixed-line internet. (ideally fiber)
Business-line stuff tends to be dirt-cheap once it goes off lease and is sold on EBay or as a refurb unit. Just buy it used in good shape and you'll come out ahead of consumer-grade junk.
Try replacing the (glued in) battery in that 3 year old Apple laptop. Apple design has gone way downhill since 2013 or so -- they've sacrificed good engineering on the altar of style.
It's not the engineers. Blame the business-school types who manage them, who went through the US b-school system and learned how to be better sociopaths.
As far as laptops, business-grade Dells and Lenovos (7000 series and X series) work fine, are repairable, and last long. Yeah, Apple is junk.
So you still lose a convoy and maybe an A-10, if the enemy (i.e. people fighting against US aggression) are smart enough to conceal a few people with MANPADs a reasonable distance from the ambush.
All that's needed is some sort of electronic jamming tech to turn an entire convoy full of supplies into twisted metal and broken supplies. And yes, this can be a good thing -- anything that slows down imperialist wars doesn't make me feel all that sad.
Theres a happy medium between Puritania...I mean the US... and India. Czech Republic, Netherlands, or even Canada are better at not making idiotic rules, to be enforced by bullying scum in uniform.
Yes.
Try bringing a bottle of wine to a park, normal in most civilized countries.
Try dealing with parking in a major US city. Cops in other countries tend to give a bit more slack than Americans.
Try driving through a rich white area while black, or being a rich white man in a poor black area. Pig harassment city.
Try planting a garden instead of grass in some Chichi communities. Yep, a couple in Florida was fined for just that.
And most of the tech scum mentioned aren't doing anything new or original (Uber is still a taxi service at the end of the day, WeWork is a sublessor). They're just using VC scum's money to undercut established local businesses and consolidate them. One more reason why the US needs a good, long, hard tech recession.
Americans are lobbying for the right to steal/mine a foreign country's citizens' personal data. India should tell the US to go piss off, and take its Microsoft/Google lobbying home with it.
Yep: corruption being available to the average person is actually a huge democratizing force. Being able to pay an officious cop to go piss off is better than being excessively fined for minor things like in the US.
No one's conquering us, not while we have (relatively cheap) strategic weapons. The purpose of something like an F-35 is wars abroad, wars of conquest BY THE US, not protecting our own soil.
Consuming more health care (initially) is a good thing -- people getting treatment for long-standing conditions actually saves money in the long term. People SHOULD be encouraged to seek early treatment for issues.
As far as welfare causing crime, crime has been around long before welfare. POVERTY breeds it, and UBI actually allows a path out of minimum-wage poverty for many people.
Tuition is one thing, but where do you live, how do you support any family members that need you while attending school. School is a big TIME commitment that takes away from time that can otherwise be used to make money.
Except you do reap the benefits. University tuition in Canadian universities for citizens and legal residents is dirt-cheap by US standards, even without assistance. Also, if you lose your (upper) middle-class status due to losing your job, sudden disability, etc, the safety net will be there for you. Unlike in many parts of the US, where you'd be fucked.
UBI is paid whether one works or not. Meaning, you'd get $15,000 per year. If you worked part-time (20hr/wk) at min wage (say $10/hr), you'd get another $10,000 per year less taxes. So you'd be up to $23,000/yr. There's still an incentive to work. Contrast this with the current welfare/disability system, where benefits are taken away if you're working, and you can see that UBI actually creates MORE incentive to work, not less.
The US has had a few interesting moments in this respect too. Google "Louis Slotin" and "Harry Daghlian." Basically, using a handheld screwdriver to keep a critical mass of Pu from going critical is a bad idea. If the air starts to glow blue, run!

But definitely hilarious if you're a country being invaded and need to bankrupt the invaders with minimal harm to human beings...

Or buy a cheapie WiFi router on Craigslist for $5, don't connect the Ethernet, and connect the TeeVee to its SSID.

I think AT&T had 500 minutes for $50 in 2005 or so. 10 cents a minute was about the same as landline long distance in the late 90s.

At least the UK is studying it, not claiming that global warming is a Chinese conspiracy.

The poor often don't see doctors because they don't have the TIME to take a day off from work.

Who eats protein powder unless they're a gym bunny or an infant who eats formula? Most of us eat real food, not melamine-laced Frankensupplements.

And how does this portrayal differ from humans in today's consumer economy?
