    You said:

If it were good, people would want to listen to it, and it would therefore get airplay, all without laws which erode my freedom.

You mean like the system they use for getting songs play on American stations?

You pull out the old Trudeau straw man, so I know that you aren't up on you're history (i.e. we've been taking it in the end a lot longer than that).

Unfortunately we seem to be either subject to the whims of megacorps or governments. I think you're a little naive to rail against the way things are in Canada like that. You seem to infer that it's better elsewhere.

  2. Re:Hey genius... on Can XML Replace Proprietary Document Formats? · · Score: 1

Yes, but even a GIF with it's proprietary compression and licensing is well-documented, and picking appropriate tools for the job is easy. With Word (and most MS documents), you need the same version as your client, and you must use that to product the document, or you're screwed.

  3. Re:I'll tell you how... on Can XML Replace Proprietary Document Formats? · · Score: 1

Yes, you do find a way to deal with it. The complaint, however, is that the reality of working with most MS Products, is that you must have a copy of the exact version of the product that your client is using, and this must be the tool that you use. If you don't do this, the aggravation is such that the work isn't worth taking. Even if you do this, you will still probably run into problems if the document is non-trivial.

I don't think it's scary at all. I think it's a good example of how the net is still at least a little wild and immature relative to the homogenized blob of other mass media. Sure it's cute and pathetic, but I think the popularity is deserved because of the way it speaks of naivete rather than being a polished attempt at exploitation. Regardless of the truthfulness of it, I'm still glad to see things like this be just as popular as (PORTAL SITE X), even if just for a couple of days.

I think you should have Tux doing something nasty to the MS Office mascot.

I use this convention at home, but I use dwarves for systems, and secondary characters for other things: i.e. EvilQueen is the printer, and Kindly Woodsman is my palm account.
