and that means with NOBODY in control, neither guvmint nor Microshaft.
Adam Smith's invisible hand only works when there are so many consumers and producers that no one individual can influence it. M$ long ago passed the point of being too big for a free market.
Could not one be deduced from the other? I have always thought RealNetworks stunk (stank? smelled!) because the protocol is proprietary and secret. If so, then releasing the source for a server would make it easy enough to write a client, right? I expect there could be some fun trying to guess the inverse algorithm, but it shouyld be possible, methinks with too little true knowledge.

Fun is what you make it. Work is what you make it. I could double my salary by working in Silicon Valley but I choose not to.
And Katz -- do you enjoy this job you have, of writing silly articles devoid of meaning?
This article is about as useful as edible underwear that's been worn for 3 months straight.

Didn't Hayes sue other modem manufacturers for using the +++ interrupt idea? I say good riddance. What an idiotic thing to patent.
On the other hand, this article reports that a Hayes VP says they aren't dead. Too bad.
