Batch o Quickees
First off, various website and software announcements:
Rik van Riel wrote
in to say that the
The Linux Memory Management home page,
including the More than 1GB Faq, as moved.
Jennifer
wrote in to tell us that eterm now
has its own domain.
Rak wrote in to send us a link to
a new site aiming to keep up with
GNOME Development.
chrism wrote in to say
that Brian Paul of Mesa Fame is looking for a new home for
said software. Email if you can help.
Now that the straight stuff is out of the way, some fun stuff:
kweiheri tron wrote in to send us a link to
a telescope that
you can control online.
Eli sent us a link
to the Bonsai Potato. It's
just crazy.
Jamie Wilkinson sent
us a link to www.retards.com. It's
not what you might think it is.
A couple of other folks have written in recently and mentioned
Smartass.org. It's a nifty
site. Check it out.
Is there any legal precedent which applies here? I don't think that there is anything wrong with people pointing a registered domain at someone else's server. Microsoft probably won't figure it out for a while, and when they do, they may decide that the hits are worth the bad association.
This merely points to the fact that Microsoft's carpoint webserver isn't configured to distinguish between HTTP/1.1 virtual hosts.
Suprised to find they are very different.
Man this is good, but wait till the m$ lawyers come chasing, even if they have no legal precedence they will try their scare tactics.
I imagine BillyG is going to have a hard time prosecuting Mr. Smith in Queensland. Quite possibly the best whois query I've done in a while.
Tom the Average (tom@shorock.com)
Very cute.
= property&property=0&street=%3F&suburb=MILT ON&postcode=4064&state=QLD&busId=2000001&mapColour =0&auth=aeefbcd04aedbd20010
. (Note: This doesn't actually work, as the posting code is putting a space in the 'suburb' tag. BUG BUG BUG.)
The waycool bits are the fact that
1: Microsoft aren't going to be able to do anything about it, apart from fixing their web server code
2: Their whois is pseudo-fake
3: The mobile number they give is a Vodafone 'Quick Connect' number - no ID needed to get one.
Gotta love Australia. Totally untracable. Sucko Billy Boy!
The only thing they can get bitten on is if they haven't allready paid their internic bill for the domain.. (Which doesn't look likely - seems to have been created in April 1998 - 27th to be precices. Anyone know if it was taking about 26 days to process results around then?)
Oh, and for anyone who wants to know where that place is, here's a nice little link showing you where they are:
http://www.whereis.com.au/displayMap.asp?action
Click
I think it's fortuitous that the whereis map appears on top of a brewery 8-)
I take it that they're not big fans of Colonial Limited, which appears to be an Australian bank.
Forget M$ lawsuits, they should be more worried about a legal challange from within Oz, i.e. banks generally keep a pretty big stable of land-sharks.

It might be a bit easier than originally thought!
203.46.57.3 == we.are.not.retards.com
203.46.57.1 == router.retards.com
Which sounds very much like a vanity IRC domain.
Anyone wanna go through the PTR records and find out what else is in 57.46.203.in-addr.arpa?

they appear to have ultraviolence.org :-)
www.ultraviolence.org
cane.ultraviolence.org
madman.morrison.com
(the last two werent up.. all in the same IP address sturucture.. this little joke must have cost them a bit!
sorry.. its madman.marrison.com.. not morrison :-)
Obviously, these guys must be a subsidiary of Castlemaine Perkins Pty Ltd. I guess it's an ad for Castlemaine XXXX beer:
http://web.logicworld.com.au/~justin/
I'm no drone ( don't have the guys to sign my name from here though :-), but yes I read /.
The name of the domain brought up a good point. It took me more than 5 minutes to realise that they were just pointing me to microsoft.com. I was even reading the copywright and I was lauging out loud. Then I realised it was the true (c) of m$ :)
Oh well, worth the laugh. Greets to the author.
Because the potatoe only devoloped in central and south America. I believe the Zen sect of buddhism started before such tubers were transplanted by our ancector-eco-terrorists.
Does this mean I'm humor impaired?
Man, that's hilarious. There used to be a great collection of 404 pages laying around on the web... I wonder where it went. Hmm... Google time.
"Sebastian you're in a mess. They called you King of all the Hipsters, is it true or are you still the Queen?" -- B
Legally, that guy owns retards.com and can do whatever he wants with it. If that happens to mean redirecting all URL's to M$, I don't think even Billy can stop him from this expensive prank.
But yes, it is surprising that it's being done this late, at the 2.2pre stage. I suppose the potential improvement is so significant that Linus feels that getting it in for 2.2 is worth the risk.
I don't see what the point of either of these sites are- I didn't see anything at www.retards.com that was that vicious (except the name) and retards.com was just..... retarded. Am I missing something or is this it.
You bastards!
fish and pipes
It's really too bad the retards.com guy/guys made themselves so hard to track down! I was about to write fanmail. That is the coolest thing to do with a fun domain and no comment. It sure beats, "Hi may name is X, and I go to X." Pretty awesome.

I got one of these for Christmas! I plan to plant it next week when i go back to school. Let me know if anybody wants me to post regular updates on a web page somewhere. (cluening@hotmail.com)
Posted from the wireless couch.
That's pretty funny.
/.?
Wonder how long until MS finds out about it?
Do MS-drones read
A host is a host from coast to coast...
Unless it's down, or slow, or fails to POST!
Wasn't Wilbur Smith the protagonist in Orwell's "1984"?
"There are two major products that come out of Berkeley: LSD and UNIX. We don't believe this to be a coincidence."
and talks about those who haven't the time for waiting. Is this an example of potato zen at work?

Infuriate left and right
Flame me if I'm wrong, but isn't this just a fancy link to Micro$oft's site?
I gotta get one of these....I don't buy much junk but this idea kicks Cha Cha Cha Chea Head's ass.
young billy will be quite surprised when trying to visit www.hotnastynerdgirlswhosuckstuff.com =]
