Somewhat fascitiously, I can't help but think of the movie: why do we have to learn how to use knives? Because the enemy cannot shoot you if you remove his finger.
I don't know if anyone has looked at the MythTV website recently, but apparently the guy who wrote the code has been laid off. So, not only is he a good programmer, anyone able to hire him will probably be able to get him to set up their MythTV box for free!!!
A reason why a lot of the blue laws about gambling, or even drugs and prostitution, are not so much because people are against them per se, they just don't want the elements that they bring in their neighborhood. Obviously a good portion of the US enjoys gambling; most communities would hate to have a casino in their neighborhood. Most people really don't care about prostitution; they just don't want hookers, pimps, and such lowering their property value.

For the love of God and all that is Holy, never use the letter 'l' as a variable. Why?
k = 1;
l = 2;
m = l + k;
depending on your font, it may be very hard to figure that out, especially if you are skimming. Also, it's better for to double up, as in:
ii = 1;
jj = 2;
which makes searches and replaces easier. Still, you don't want:
kk = 1;
ll = 2;
mm = ll + k;
