  2. Re: LOGO vs. BASIC on Forty Years of LOGO · · Score: 1

I got in to programming a bit later, probably around 1984... started by typing in those BASIC programs you would get listed in the computer magazines of the day into an already old Atari 800. A few years later (1987) I started getting some formal programming instruction (Intro to Computer Programming in junior high) with LOGO Writer (on an IBM XT) as the tool the class was based around. As a teaching tool, I think it was great for a few reasons: (1) Instant gratification - the interpreted mode let you move around the 'turtle' and draw on the screen with some simple commands. You have to admit, for a little kid, BASIC provided little in the way of instant gratification when it came to computer graphics. (2) Early introduction to procedural programming - the GOSUBS and RETUNS in old ROM/Disk BASIC do provide the same type of functionality, but moving on to Pascal (as well as QuickBASIC, and then later C, then C++, etc) was a lot easier having already worked with the more formal structure of LOGOs procedures. Don't get me wrong - I don't disagree with you at all! I just wanted to point out some additional things that later made me realize that the old turtle wasn't too bad of a teacher after all. Thanks for the memories!

  5. What about the risks to our food supply? on FDA Set To Approve Products from Cloned Cows · · Score: 1

There are a lot of things that can be said on either side of this issue - and many are discussed above - but there seems to be a lack of concern regarding the risk that this genetic homogeneity poses to our food supply. If a huge proportion of our livestock are genetically identical, this has to raise the risk of a greater percentage of them falling victim to a pathogenic epidemic at some time in the future. Our (and the animals) genetic diversity is usually a great defence in the face of this type of disease outbreak. I'm sure you can imagine similar risks to our staple grain crops as well.

All right - white American males complaining that they have been the victim of institutional racism, from either their employer or their government (or their landlord, etc.), are so delusional and so far from understanding what minorities and women face every day that I am forced to completely discount the rest of what they have to say. STFU. And I'm a white American male who actually grew up somewhere where I was* a minority.

  15. South Florida has been doing this for years on Lawyers Using Databases To Grab Clients · · Score: 5, Interesting

I actually used to run a small business that collected traffic ticket (and DUI) information from the counties and provided it to ticket law offices in a format they could use (i.e. mailing lists). This information was hosted on various gov't run BBSs; but, it is now available on the internet. And this was back in 1999! And the jail (who had been arrested the day before) data was available, but my clients were only interested in traffic citations and DUIs... My point? This has been going on for years, and the timing of the article suprised me. I think those people were especially upset since the police didn't call them (although they had gone through his wallet to determine and post his demographic info); however, the article seems to indicate that he was 18 or over, making you wonder if anything 'wrong' occurred in this situation. Annoying? Yes. Public information? Hey, it is. Interesting debate, though.
