  1. Many are missing the point of a college education on Cooperation in CS Education? · · Score: 1

Many people feel a college education is structured with a focus placed on getting the student a job. This is how many students take it, in reality colleges and universities want to enrich the student as a whole. This is how most of the people in academia would like it to be. Of course starting salaries and big corporate sponsors are good for the bottom line. Working in groups may be a good skill for a programming job, but only through individuals practicing and working with pieces of code can they become enriched. Being enriched students they can then apply those skills learned through individual study to a "job skill". Just a view from a student AND a member of the work force.

Yeah well i saw an aritcle on "Ukrainian Industry" about three years ago??? and it seems that they are not i need of electricity like they are in need of cleaner factories. They do not even put the basic scrubbing systems on their plants that have black smoke bellowing out of them 24 hours a day. Many Ukrainian cities have not seen light in years, there are large numbers of cancer deaths and everything is polluted. Their industries are cranking, just not with clean power. Maybe we as a world we should spend more time worrying about what comes out of the factories besides packaged goods. And why should we as a nation give them aid? They screwed up, they can fix it. America gives out enough money - it would be nice to see the thousands of dollars a year i give to my government do something constructive....

Yeah and im sure everyone out there wants to spend an hour downloading these binary docs. It would not work. People just need to take a stand against MS. People scream for democracy and capitalism but never exsersise it. We minus well be communists and eat what ever we are fed. And when people are too stupid to see that they are being fed something from un unmarked can the government needs to fix it for them. But maybe the government will stand up for the little guy and trash MS with its DOJ case.

  6. MP3 all the way, I guess on Canada Taxing Blank CDs? · · Score: 1

Im american and live in Connecticut so we pay 6%
State tax, 1% Income tax in the state, about 5k a
year in property taxes, 33% income tax, 53% gift tax, marrige tax etc etc. Taxing for the hell of it is tyranny. Anyway the recording industry does not like this. They do not get a share of the taxes and therefore it makes their product out right m0ore expensive to their target audience. THe are already having trouble fending off mp3s all over the net and now this? If this does happen I could see some real big friction betweem the music industry and the canadians. You might not just be paying more for just the tax, the rec. industry might also raise the price of cds to cover their losses, 25 dollar cds anyone? (of course with the exchange rate that is probably what you pay already :-).

My feelings are that we buy/use/maybe make what
we like. In my opinion motif sux and is a dinasour
java has potential but is still slow on my machine
and then there is Qt and GTK. How i see them is
something that is good for those who program but
it is not pretty from a user's standpoint. I am
a linux only user just to note but windoze has a
far superior feel than any of the X stuff. I
mean KDE and Gnome are good but not drag all over
and pretty as hell graphics. Dont make me out to be one sided on the issue, i think win has all kinds of problem. But i do feel that the look and feel of X is far behind.
