Most of the terrorism, and a lot of the rioting is being caused by a particularly extremist sect that is deeply entrenched in Saudia Arabia, and was the backbone of the Taliban. Wahabism. It was founded by an Islamic scholar Abdul Wahab.

One important note is that Deobandism is the backbone of the Taliban. It is a movement that was formed in Northern India and predates Wahabism. It went on to influence the Wahabism after it had become extant in Saudi Arabia but it is still a separate (and older) movement.

We are compelled to vote in Australia.
We are also compelled to list a preference for all candidates on a ballot paper (at least in a Federal Election in the lower house).

    Supplementary note to non-Australians:
We are not compelled to vote. We are compelled to show up and have our name crossed off the register although, like jury duty, there are exceptions even to that. You can take the ballot papers and doodle on them or leave them blank. Donkey vote (mark 1,2,3,4,5,6 down the list) or vote informally by not following instructions. So long as you either put them in the box or hand them back to the official, you're cool.

Why political parties? Same reason as hard-core porn, prostitution and pot smoking are permitted in Canberra. Politicians aren't like everyone else.

Political parties don't choose the government of Canberra. The people of Canberra do and because it's necessarily largely an educated, professional group of public servants, they tend towards liberal social policies and this is reflected by the government they elect.

The problem is that to the average Australian, there is the constant, rarely mentioned threat of Indonesia and the idea that they are ready to pounce. By virtue of their enormous population, they could easily overrun Australia.

Most Australians have no concept of how large or harsh this country is. They have no idea about the deficiencies of the Indonesian military or the fragile nature of the Indonesian state. Most only have some vague idea that it would be WWII all over again with a withdrawal behind the Brisbane line and faith in the idea that America will save us because we've always been behind THEM.

My (desperate) hope is that Labor's insistence on the amendments to the agreement is an attempt at deliberate sabotage. This way, the whole thing can sink because of the stubbornness of the government and the ALP can save face by saying, "We gave it our best shot."

The problem is that Labor is terrified of being labeled anti-American by the government which is what happened every time they objected to the war in Iraq or opposition to this FTA.

Unfortunately, in a democracy, you get the government that the majority deserves. And the fuckheaded Australian majority would rather be bought off with baby bonuses, property-bubble expanding 'first home owner grants' and East Germany style sporting programmes that deliver gold medals.

Software patents or the promise of North American prices for pharmaceuticals just don't figure into the lunkheads' evaluation of party policies.
