    Exactly!

  2. Climbing the mountain on Girls Don't Want To Be Geeks · · Score: 1

I dont think that just women look at programmers as locked up in a little room with no windows typing away furiously. Most of my friends find my interest in programming insane and cannot understand why I would waste my time debugging some code rather than playing video games (not even perfect dark can compete with a nicely messed up bit of illegible perl code).

but i think for those who understand programmers, there are still those who wont take part. i think of it like mountaining climbing. why climb a mountain? because it is there!

programming is probleming solving and once you get to the precipice (gcc myuglycode.c) you can look back at your accomplishment and revel in your skill (or lack there of if you get errors). when you are solving a problem, you think only about how to solve it and you dont tend to worry about what you look like, what you are putting in your mouth for sustenance, or who is talking to you. i think i can see why this sort of outward degredation might turn off women (although there will always be a percentage of women who get it too).

anyway, looking at my neat little metaphor, it brings up the question: How many women mountain climb for fun?

  3. Improper data? on Rosetta Disk For 10K-Year History · · Score: 1

I just read an article in this month's Wired (pg. 94) in which Jim Mason (the guy in charge of the project) said the goal is a 10000 year disk but the current nickel one only lasts for 2000 years. Is someone wrong somewhere or did I misread something? Go to this link for an older article (last month!) that says it only lasts for 1000+ years with no guarenteed 10000 life span. http://www.wired.com/wir ed/archive/6.06/newmedia.html?pg=4

  4. It wont work... (a little redundant) on Movies Online? · · Score: 1

I think it would be really useful to be able to download movies and I am sure that would be a huge industry in itself but why new movies?

Why not all the other movies out there? I can visualize myself in the future sitting in front of the same monitor, same computer, and a OC768 in place of the cable modem watching Meaning of Life or Life of Brian while waiting for my kernel to compile or something like that.

If they (whoever starts the industry or gives it funding) start with the old movies (movies on tape/dvd) then they can build the market and eventually take over the new movies share of the market too.

But I dont see computers are competing with cinemas in the near future simply because it isnt nearly as fun to sit around ones computer screen and stare at the 640x480 resolution that the movies will probably run at. Plus, as someone else pointed out, how are you supposed to pick up/look at/take chicks out without a movie theater? I can see it now:

Johnny: Suzie do you want to go see The Matrix 197 (Neo's Last Bypass Surgery) with me tonight?

    Suzie: Sure!

Johnny: Cool! I hope you dont mind my parents being in the next room checking in on us every minute.

Of course being 17 maybe I wont feel this way about the situation when the technology/market come around more.

That makes a whole lot of sense.

Anyway, I had to vent those feelings at the expense of being flamed.

Yes, I am 17 and I started with C++ in windows but the more I worked on webpages and CGI, I started to use perl heavily...

  8. Star Wars metaphor on Bob Young Blasts Recent Anti-Open Source Article · · Score: 1

I don't mean to be redundant but it seems like everyone has to take sides with open source or they are evil. The same goes for people who use Windows. If they talk to someone who is pro open source, they think that you are a communist. It is all about the war now and not joining the darkside.

For instance, the guy writing the original article obviously didn't know much on the subject and when you consider it, there was no real purpose to the article but to do a little name-slinging.

On the other hand, it is understandable that Mr. Young would reply with all these stats about open source, etc when they also might not be a mirror of the real situation. "Linux-based OSs" seems to cover a lot of ground...

People also get riled up about "I just want software that doesn't suck." What the hell is wrong with that? Do we want software that sucks?? Also, just because something is open source does not mean it is stable. It has to be something that is open source and people are actually working on to improve it. There are a lot of programs out there that are open source and suck because they don't get enough attention. Just saying that sendmail is opensource and that is why it is used doesn't cover enough. It is opensource and damn good code too! It has to be good.

I guess my conclusion is that open source has a ton to offer by letting people improve their work in a community of programmers but just because something is open source doesn't mean it is good. Both articles seem like just an excuse to flame the other side a little more.
