"Good job you read my mind. You got to poke fun at the christian. Do you feel good about yourself now? I never implied in that statement that God is infallible or that he was omniscient, I merely stated my thoughts."
But the bible claims god is infallible and can never lie.
Numbers 23:19
19 God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?
You're not realizing the full contradiction: An all powerful being who's capable of creating the universe used ignorant men to write and translate books laboriously in the most inefficient manner possible, yet he claims he wants everyone to know who he is, what his morality is, and to believe in him
It's a contradiction because the all powerful being is *not using his power* in the most intelligent and efficient manner possible, a god who doesn't use his full and knowledge of the universe is by definition a non god.
One only has so much time in a day, and there are innumerable other errors one could focus on, lets see you tackle my points rather then being discourteous.
Unfortunately you are incorrect, ideologies don't create progress, people do. Wealth has always been created in all societies, it's a western/american mythology "capitalism is the best" you or most people have no idea what's the best because you will never live long enough to see radical social changes beyond your own life, the people decide what is best depending on the changes in their environment.
Communism had technological and social advancement, in fact when they implemented market policies in russia they went backwards, I know people in russia that preferred the former system because the west certainly did not have a clue of how to implement market reforms and so russia ended up with a shiteload of problems.
The world is not an ideology, and capitalism is a political ideology.
Not to mention law of supply and demand could not be chosen to be ignored (in the case of piracy), the non scarce nature of information makes socialist economic elements possible, since every extra free copy once a business has made enough money is not going to effect their business since those people wouldn't have paid for it.
There's the ideology (captitalism) and the actors (men), no one lives according to ideology if you looked at how they behaved, even "pro market" types pirate, they are hypocrites and thats what I hate most about humans who are ardently pro market if you looked at their computers you'd find a huge amount of hypocrisy.
History us far from over the idea that socialism or communism failed is a misnomer because elements of all ideologies are always being practiced in any system, and people react based on changs in their environment.
This is what I mean by people not being well read or informed. Any system always has pro's and cons and drawbacks, anecdotes or stories from school do not substitute for serious scholarly research into complex matters. It's takes a lot of slog to see through the mythos of our societies and go read about the facts from other sources then pro propaganda institutions of your own society.
The fact is technological advancements are on collision course with older capitalist dinosaurs, and it will take a few generations to shake them out while the kiddies/kids growing up will accept non scarcity of information and find new ways to monetize it.
I'm not saying the market is bad, I'm saying the actors are bad, any system can be good or bad depeneding on it's actors behaviour.
As nerds we always have be skeptical of over enthusiasm for any idealogy / socio economic system, since we should always subscribe to truth and making the world a better place for our children and if ideology gets in the way of the facts and making our world a better place we have the option of updating it/ignoring it/changing it, etc, to suit the times and changes around us.
Think of all the radical social changes that have happened in the last 400 years, like they are suddenly going to stop.
The end of black slavery in america for instance and the advent of the civil rights movement, we tend to see the world through our own narrow perspective because of what we are taught and because we've never truly *known* anything else.
Most people are not serious about the truth, if we called out all the ideologies on slashdot and see what kind of scholarly articles, research and science and history they read on other nations and their development, we'd find a lot of people that know next to nothing, and this is the problem, there is not enough time in the day to digest it all unless one is committed to hard slog of seperating fact from fiction, and few people are charitable or dedicated to wanting to know rather then just accept what they are being fed by their home nation or a few anecdotes from people that claim x is evil, y is good, etc, etc.
All systems have positives and negatives and I think you'd agree finding the truth in complex issues is important not naive ideology.

I'm sorry but you are not even well read enough to take place in the discussion, this is what I mean, you are inexperienced and ignorant of the larger issues.
Your pro market bullshit ignores the infringement on peoples rights having taken place, not only that you ignored
Thomas Babington Macaulay's speech in the House of Commons, 5 February 1841 on the extension of the term of copyright protections:
The man predicted everything that is happening NOW and even he thought it was unjust.
Non scarcity exists, excessive anti intellectual free market types don't like it... too bad nature's not going to change her non scarcity of information policy.
Content creators were granted those rights by the public, that was the whole original purpose of patent and copyright and they were to be for LIMITED TIME, not the other way around.
The fact that you believe the current system is ok shows your profound ignorance of the matter.
Due to the advent of technological advancement and the internet, formerly scarce works have become common and easily downloaded due to the non scarce nature of information, this has got westerners and excessively pro corporate, pro business peoples panties in a twist from which they have never recovered. Capitalist philosophy only makes sense when an item a person wants to consume is scarce, otherwise the "evil" socialist economics can work (and piracy is a lesson in that it works FYI). Therefore copyright has become a highly charged issue because nature of information and political economic ideology of western capitalism are at odds.
According to neoclassical economics because of the non scarce nature of digital works, their worth should be driven down towards zero and many businesses should be going bankrupt, note that this has not happened and the Movie industry has recently broken box office records. Please refer to Dark Knight released in 2008 in the following list below of top grossing box office movies of all time.
The nature of copyright and software licensing has always been questionable from the outset, because the public was not informed enough to mount resistance to the idea of software licensing and EULA's. So many industries got their way by way of public ignorance. Industries later gathered together lobbying more as the internet rose to power and their response to non scarcity of information was in the form of the DMCA
Which added to the already dubious practice of licensing software (individuals never own their software) which most nerds have always thought dubious at best (See: Linux)
The advent of the DMCA and licensing prevents legitimate owners of software from outright owning and modifying what they bought due to crazy EULA's and liscensing that weaseled it's way into "normalcy" due to public technological ignorance, which attempted to limit software owners rights to ownership and rights to develop their own software to work with the software they already own. This has pissed off the informed who understand these issues. See: Bnetd
Corporations and the bad kinds of capitalists alike have been trying to wrest individual ownership from the people by infringing on their individual rights to own the products they buy. Software companies have always been one of the worst industries due to the idea of licensing software to individuals, rather then individuals being able to own software outright and do whatever they wish with it.
Enterprising individuals like John carmack who released open source doom, etc, and Volition Inc of Freespace 2 fame (see: http://scp.indiegames.us/ ) have been breaths of fresh air for the informed among us as they understand the deeper issues of software patents, copyright and software ownership by and large.

Ok but the fact that you mentioned "Grammar trolling" put a bit of a slant on you otherwise inert post, so you could see how I could take you as a grammar/spelling nazi.
My point being the fact that you mentioned grammar trolling tipped me off to the fact that you just *had to point out the mistake*, which therein started my response so that you know why they are made in the first place, so that you respond in a considerate manner when it's quite obviously unintentional.
I have no idea how you got sex out of my post by posting about electrical brownouts and using the word "effect", but it must be something to do with the way your neural networks organize information since that seems non sequitorish so I imagine your mind was primed by reading something else and the idea of sex was already on your mind.
"I believe you meant to use the word "affect". It's possible you're grammar trolling [xkcd.com],"
Actually it's a common unconscious mistake, and has to do with the way someones mind organizes memories. You should do a little research on neurology, the grammar and spelling nazi's need to bone up on science and lay off when someone makes a mistake, they should try to understand *the science* behind why such mistakes are made, then one stops being a retard and *understands* why these things occur and that it was *unintentional*.
When you see missing words, garbled grammar/sentences similar sounding words affect/effect, their/there, etc, this has to do with memory error retrieval do to how the brain stores and organizes words and information.
This means that their are issues with noise and signals getting dropped when sent to the motor neurons/nervous system and the user does not know they occured, since he did send consciously intend the thing in his mind but the unconscious systems did not retrieve or send all the data properly.
Most thought is unconscious, you and many others like you still suffer from the enlightenment fallacy:
See here, watch the video from 15 mintues in to ~24-30 minute mark, also the rest of the videos there are interesting when you get the time, I forget which video it is and when the time is but they show a newscaster making a "freudian slip" and they go on to explain why those errors happen to begin with and why they are so common.
That I can agree on but you made it sound like there were no benefits at all, economic efficiency is only one of many factors one should look at, if you look at any industry close enough you will always find bucketloads of inefficiencies, hence I dislike the argument from economic efficiency unless it is backed by hard data and a well reasoned consideration of the strengths and weaknesses of other possibilities.
"The only reason SSDs aren't capable of higher speeds is because the bus is not capable of more. There's no point making a controller capable of 2GB/s if you are only able to transfer at 300MB/s."
This is idiotic, every bus interface always has more bandwidth than most devices can take advantage of, the case was the same when we moved from ISA to PCI and then to PCIe (peripheral bus), from IDE to EIDE to ATA to SATA (hard disk bus).
"Sounds to me like a bad idea. Surely there are some tradeoffs between speed and some other also important metric. Ex, faster might mean larger erase block sizes."
But this has nearly no effect on reads, which is the majority of what most drives are doing. You want the fastest interface possible, we're talking about *flash memory* here.
There is no drawback to faster interfaces, your concerns are irrelevant since you're talking about engineering flaws and the immaturity of solid state, the interface is immaterial to such concerns.
"That's an advantage? It sounds like a disadvantage to me"
I think you're missing the real advantage: Brownouts don't effect huge populations because power is local, just imagine if the entire internet could be taken down by a single router. While something may technically be "ecnomically inefficient", it's relative to costs and benefits of redundancy and independent power networks.
Economic efficiency does not exist in a vacuum and often times is very vacuous concept - i.e. locked down platforms for chips and software that waste a tonne of effort re-inventing the wheel.
"I've wondered for a long time why none of these MMO games from Asia (Lineage, Lineage II, Aion, Granado Espada, etc) have an art direction from mythology and fantasy of the region"
Because western aesthetic is more universal, game companies research this kind of thing they want the WIDEST market possible. Also over half of World of warcraft subscribes are asian, so it's obvious that certain aesthetics have universal appeal.
"I don't believe you fully understand Christ reason for coming."
Yes in fact I do, the bible makes it plain itself.
"And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins."
The story: Christ was raised because he was sinless and hence could act as a mediator and judge men for the forgiveness of sins.
Without christ all are dead. His message was clear, and painfully simple.
The truth is simple, you and others like you have made it needlessly complex because unconsciously or not you can't stand the thought of death, suffering in this world and annihilation.
If the bible promised a swift kick in the ass and a quick death, NO ONE would go to the lengths religious people do to believe in it. They believe in it because they want to live again and are willing to fully delude themselves because the alternative (whether they are aware of it or not) is psychologically distasteful, and human beings hate living with uncertainty in the face of death so they will put round pegs in square holes to make themselves feel better.
"I really don't think God got his facts wrong."
God being a perfect being could never obfuscate the truth. Am omniscient being, by definition can't fail.
Think about this: You create a being, and you know beforehand he is going to transgress, yet thats the way you designed him. Christianity is a basketcase of contradiction.
The truth is simple, universal and mundane like the world is round. All a real god would have to do is leave a monolith/video/sattelite, or permanent scientific evidence of his existence.
A book that needs to be laboriously translated over and over again and never reaches indigenous native tribes far from the middle east simply "die off not knowing anything". Is the most inefficient and ignorant way to go about things, this is why religion is man made. The fact that truth has to be spread by incompetent and ignorant men is proof positive of religions lowly origin.
You are an example of everything I stated to be true theology and those who engage in it: You're building more and more complex justifications and obfuscations for what should be a simple mundane matter, no one questions their own existence for instance. That's how simple the truth is. Christianity is needlessly complex, this is proof positive of it's lack of truth and evidence it is not divinely inspired.
Any truth once discovered becomes a simple matter, it's that man cannot hold the whole universe of things in his head at once, and therein comes ignorance.
You're missing the whole point completely (as always)
As man evolved, then it is still a contradiction for the teachings state that death passed upon all men because of ONE man's transgression. But death was passing upon all man before that transgression.
There was never transgression under evolutionary world, the story of punishment in the bible makes no sense, since adam would have been a descendent of prior apes/homo-whatever who's existence was based on strife, and bloodshed since the beginning of time. The point your missing is that the punishment makes no sense since adam (in the biblical narrative) was constituted as something to die, not because of sin, but because thats the way biology works.
This is why the christian message makes no sense under a liberal christian perspective, what reason did christ come for? Under an evolutionary worldview: Absolutely nothing, because their is no sin to forgive. Since death, disease and suffering was there from the start and part of the process of creating human beings.
This is exactly why religious people stretch credibility, God allegedly is the perfect omniscient being, yet he can't get his facts right... it makes no sense, the truth simple. Yet when one becomes religious one comes up with more and more elaborate explanations trying to 'save' its validity when it is clearly impossible.
Wait a minute, how does evolution mean sin cannot exist?
Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned--
Sin can't enter the world through man and then death through sin (because sin entered the world through a man, and death through sin entered because of that man). Since death and bloodshed existed before man ever showed up on the world stage, it is a contradiction a mis-statement about reality.
Your show me why I gave up debating religious people, because it is is pointless, they purposely short circuit their thinking and live in denial of what their own teachings say.
It goes beyond just selfishness, the whole point of the free market is the buyer chooses of his own will, making a law to force people to pay for something that they don't want and did not choose freely is the anti-thesis of that.
You can't combine religion and science, theology is not a respectable discipline outside of historical, cultural and literary merits.
The whole christian faith for instance is predicated on sin entering the world through one man, the whole purpose of christ's death was necessary to absolve man of sin. Under evolution man did not commit sin and death was always there since the start. Sin cannot exist and the purpose of the christian message becomes completely meaningless.
Theology is just the discpline for liberal christians when evolution finally displaced mass fundamentalism (the true form of christianity) if you study statements of faith of all the major denominations as you go back in time they get more and more historical (Treating the bible as a historical document) and not mythology.
Theology is the most disgusting "discipline" of the university education system and a relic from times past when men were ignorant of nature, they heaped misunderstanding, lies and obfuscation upon obfuscation.
Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned--
" they're saying "we want everyone who reads us to pay for it"."
The problem is no one wants to pay them, i.e. there is no market for it anymore because of the internet.
I find it humorous that people chant "Free market" and "choice for the consumer" but suddenly backtrack into collectivism under the rubric of property rights, trying to enforce something on people that the clearly do not want by manufacturing artificial monopolies (laws), even if the law won't have any it still shows how ridiculous people are.

Hello World!

" Shouldn't you be trying to emulate your father by moving beyond your comfort zone and bringing home something that will inspire your kids to pursue their own interests rather than yours?"
This is where I disagree somewhat, there are certain subjects that you would love to have been forced to take at a young age but you were not long lived enough and too new to the world to realize their importance.
My relative forced her kids all to go to music school and many ended up becoming musicians out of their own free will, even though early going they weren't so enthused but as they grew up they gained a lot of respect and appreciation for music. Even if they do not get paid professionally to play their instruments they still enjoy it and believe it was an enriching experience that they will pass onto their own children.
Now the same is not true for all children obviously, some children would probably resent it but that's the risk you take as a parent for having lived longer and having more foresight of vision.
The idea that disciplining your kids into activities they may (at the time) not be interested is somehow immoral or wrong is incorrect, since kids do not have the life experience to make judgements and reflections about the things they *Regret* their parents *didn't teach them* in hindsight. I'm sure many of us have had such occasions wishing our parents were better or were more clued in to their own wisdom, instead of letting the child (who has no lifetime of experiences and therefore foresight and judgement) do whatever it wants.
There's a balance between freedom, discipline, responsbility and enrichment and I think parents should take that part of themselves back as *the parent*.
"Still finding it ridiculous that the Major was essentially wearing a one-piece bathing suit and leather jacket as her uniform in the GITS tv series."
But we're talking about fantasy here and money, the outfit was to draw attention and $$$. Anything to get the biggest audience possible. Doing a movie/story for ones art and vision is not appreciated by everybody and therein lies the rub.
"Well, be careful there. I lost weight recently, and kept it off, and feel much better for it, but I didn't follow conventional wisdom, ie. the food pyramid + low fat + exercise."
Yes but few people are willing to radically change their diets. Diets matter no doubt about it, but exercise (even small to moderate amounts) is the key to overall better health (and I doubt you would dispute that)
You can eat healthy food + moderate amount of "bad food" once you lose the weight, most people gained weight in their youth and live with being overweight for a long period of time.
You can take it all off at once quickly with commitment over a period of a few months to a year (depending on how overweight one was) and then just do moderate maintenance (a few hours a week of walking/weights or whatever) and plus walking is healthy for anyone, bloodflow to the brain is increased and I do some of my best thinking walking for a few hours listening to songs and sometimes just shutting off songs and getting lost in deep thought.
The big thing is changing your habit, at first when you start to exercise it seems like a chore, but your body will physically adjust to your new routine once you've gone past roughly 2 weeks straight of doing it daily.
And once you see results and your entire life improves because of it (people treat you better all of a sudden, and you start really getting noticed) it keeps you from slipping.
For advice on the forums and whatnot, one can do it the diet way but most people are not willing to give up certain foods regardless they want to "live", since we are all dead in the end anyway, even the person who ate perfectly is going to die from contingency of physics and biology of aging whether that is damage or pre-programmed aging and cell death.
I agree! I was just saying that you can't avoid people's prejudice, especially in this society with the media and whatnot we can't change other people's opinions but we can chance ourselves as to avoid their stupidity. It's an imperfect world.
"Good job you read my mind. You got to poke fun at the christian. Do you feel good about yourself now? I never implied in that statement that God is infallible or that he was omniscient, I merely stated my thoughts."

See here, watch the video from 15 mintues in to ~24-30 minute mark, also the rest of the videos there are interesting when you get the time, I forget which video it is and when the time is but they show a newscaster making a "freudian slip" and they go on to explain why those errors happen to begin with and why they are so common.
Also some books for you:

It will make you see human errors and human reasoning in a whole new way.
New International Version (©1984)
The big thing is support hence I recommend to people to check out http://www.johnstonefitness.com/
