    Computer Science is 90% math at the graduate level. Don't skip out on linear algebra if you want to do 3D graphics and pay very close attention to anything involving matrices and vectors.

    I'm in Louisiana and if I could find an entry level programming job here I'd happily take 25k a year to get started. That's about how much the state pays (give or take 2 grand depending on if you start as a Programmer I or II). I probably could find one now, but I have made a change in plans that doesn't involve staying here or working an ordinary programming job. As someone above said, you don't have to work there forever and the experience will be invalueable as you move further away from your graduation date. If you work as a waiter for a year your degree will die regardless of how much money you make.

    If they want to tax Internet purchases, they need to make a separate law for it where the purchaser pays taxes to the state that the bill is sent to. So if I buy a 2000 dollar Dell computer and I live in Louisiana, Dell has to add 200 dollars in sales tax and send it to the LA gov for us. If they can't do that, then hell. I don't remember my Internet purchases. Perhaps an easier thing to do would be to simply abolish all sales taxes (stupid things anyway) and increase property taxes to make up for it. Of cousre, this is a little biased towards richer people who own property (then again, apartment complexes will just raise rent when they have to start paying higher property taxes).

    "I want my son's tape off that Web completely." I don't think this woman understands the nature of the Internet... I'll bet the Star Wars Kid wanted *that* tape off this Web completely as well. That didn't turn out so well.

    It's not that hard really. The battery causes a current of electricity with a certain voltage. Small transistors, gates, modify the voltage in a certain way depending on what combination of voltages are given to it (i.e. 1's and 0's which are arbitrary assignments to high and low voltage ranges). From these tiny logical building blocks, the device is made to work. An example of logic gates (think of 0 as False and 1 as True): AND gate (2 inputs 1 output) 0 0 = 0 0 1 = 0 1 0 = 0 1 1 = 1 OR gate (2 inputs 1 output) 0 0 = 0 0 1 = 1 1 0 = 1 1 1 = 1 NOT gate (1 input 1 output) 1 = 0 0 = 1 And so on.

    Why does it seem like slashdot is full of liberals? I just got finished watching a silly Rumsfield video from someone elses signature. It's amazing to me how many people seem to think Saddam should have been left in power. I'd support removing him from power even if he wasn't at all a threat to us in terms of WMDs or supporting terrorism (which isn't to say that he definitely wasn't a threat in either of those areas).

    If this is true, then why do many original games (even with high review scores) sell like trash? What people want is a good game wrapped in a familiar franchise with lots of replay value at as little cost as possible.

    Hah, I mostly just let their PCs fall to peices and give them the basic advice they need. If some stops working I fix it. I mean, I can't stop them from installing all kinds of ridiculous stuff. Especially with my older (not nearly as computer savvy) brother "helping" them out as well (by installing Kazaa non-lite et al.). It's an impossible battle. So I just fix things for them when they break and go into their startup every now and then and uncheck most of the junk programs.

    PacoTaco, that's fantastic. Thanks for the pointer. Hah, I actually have to run real player to get the registry value back so I can ruin it :) Maybe I'll just wait until the next time I feel the need to view a .rm and fix the registry next time instead of disabling it.

    Ah, I hate real player so much. That goddamned thing wants to start itself with my computer everytime I have to use it (requiring a manual fixing of my start menu each time). Consequently, I avoid viewing .rm's whenever possible.
