Reviving a long dormant account to say Thank You. Through my last years of high school and early university/. was near the centre of my Internet. I'm pretty sure it was here that I first heard of a little search engine called Google. It introduced me to Open Source, BSD, helped me understand Linux, and convinced me not to buy an iPod.
I had a friend who had difficulty taking notes. The office arranged for notes to be taken by another student in the class and then copies were made at the office for the disabled student.
They handled it very discretely and the other student's in the class weren't even aware of the problem. The note taker didn't even know who they were taking notes for.
Extra arrangements were also made for exams though I don't know the specifics.
. . . that is probably answered elsewhere. As a linux user (Slackware -> Redhat (about 10min) -> SuSE -> Debian) what major changes would I have to make if I switched to *BSD. Specifically is it source/binary compatible with linux. Does it have a similar "feel" to linux, how hard would it be to adapt to it? How does the hardware support compare? Will it run on the "typical" PC? Does it have any advantage (speed, stability, security or other)? Hopefully this won't incite a riot and hopefully I will get some answers. I just want to know if it's worth playing with.
Then don't call it a USENET search engine. Call it a Technical Support Thingameebob or something like that. Chances are that if you are having a problem with your computer you aren't the first person to have that problem. Most likley someone has asked about it on usenet and recived a perfectly adequate answer. The new user types their question into the search engine and out pops an answer. Without ClassicDejanews I likley would never have gotten my, printer, soundcard or joystick working under Linux. It was there and it did its job. If people recognized the potential a USENET search engine has to help them they would flock to it.
untill I read the end of the article. I don't want a transparent toy^H^H^H tool, I don't want a transparent computer, and I don't want a transparent PDA. If I want to see the insides I'll open it up. Hopefully (like the imac and Visor) this tool will be offered in a variety of different colours incuding either the traditional Vintorinox red or even better a nice shiny titanium or aluminum handle. Oh well I suppose there's always the leatherman wave.
Has anyone ever read the book "The Truth Machine." If it is the book I'm thinking of it could be considered to be a true "History of the Future." It tells the story of a genius in competition with an evil genius to invent a perfect lie dectector. Taking place throughout much of the 21st century the beginning of each chapter tells of events that "happened" that year. These blurbs are almost as good as the rest of the book. If you like good science fiction read this book. Wow! that sounded like a 8th grade book report. If someone has read the book (and liked it) please post a better description of it below.
You weigh 195 pounds and are 6'2" at least when talking among friends and associates but check what most forms and other information you fill out lists. My drivers licence (Ontario) puts my height at 173 (no units given) and the restrictions re mass of vehicles I can drive are in kg. I drive x km at y km/h and purchase the gas in $/L. When I check the temperature its in degrees C. Water freezes at 0 and boils at 100. When it's hot outside it's 30-40 and when it's cold it gets down into the negatives. A cup of water is 250mL (and that's what I read on the side if I'm pouring it). If I'm cooking I turn the knob to the F measure in the book and check to see what it is in C to get an idea of how hot it is. If you give me a temperature in F or a measure of liquid in oz or gallon I'll have no idea what your talking about. Pounds feet and inches I sort of understand. Miles and mph I do a quick conversion in my head. For almost every other measure I rely entirely on the metric system. Oh I should mention I grew up with it (born in 81) and live in a metric country, Canada.
Portsentry + logcheck availible at www.psionic.com will probably fit most of your needs. Portsentry checks for people scanning your computer in a myriad of ways and logcheck mails you when something goes wrong. Now for the bad news, the licence isn't the best. It appears to be free to use (commercial or private) and while the source could is distributed and you can modifiy it you can not distribute those modifications. The worst aspect may be the words "Some of the software at this site is PATENT PENDING." I've used these programs for several months now and been satisfied but if someone knows of a similar program with a nicer licence please let us all know.
perhaps it's because I'm too lazy to read the post/article that the quote came from but couldn't one just check if they have points by moderating an article and seeing if a change in its score appears. I agree it isn't foolproof but it should work.
meta - moderation meta - meta moderation meta - meta - meta moderation meta - meta - meta -meta moderation . .. Rob's Ultimate Moderation
Rob's Ultimate Moderation, the final word on moderation comes when all the meta moderating is finished. It consits of either your IP being banned and the comment deleted or your comment being posted as an article. Ideally the article/ban choice will be determined by the quality of the comment but in practice it will be a simple perl script powerd by a sudo-random number.
Oh, keep true A.C. posting. Many people post comments/read slashdot very rarley and can't be botherd to register. The banning of true A.C. posting will silence the silent majority of slashdot readers. Anyway those who want to be obnoxious will find ways (Like meta - A.C. posting). Don't censor the masses.
the GPL does not automatically grab all rights of your work to the FSF. Even if they update the licence unless you said other wise your software is only coverd by the version you specify.
The Slashdot FAQ doesn't allow comment posting and I think it would be a very good idea if it did. Although the normal type of posting wouldn't work because the comments would pile up overtime and make the feature useless. Perhaps allowing only registered users to post, and periodically deleting -1 comments would be a solution. If anyone likes the idea email Rob or someone who can do something.
