I actually heard about it through "Visual Developer" mag which I only picked up because it had something on visual development in Linux, and something about GNOME (which I still can't pronounce correctly).
As a result (since even before I knew this I only visited one or two sites/day unless I was looking for something specific), this is one of the only sites that I even visit anymore. I'm also getting a serious sense of deja vu writing this post for some reason.
Dr Kimberely Young, a lecturer at the University of Pittsburgh who is advising Brussels scientists, said: "Until recently, it was regarded by some psychologists as a joking matter. But the increasing number of divorces in which it is cited as a cause of family break-up has changed this attitude."
I think this article is pretty wreckless, nonetheless, in its sweeping statement that "those who spend more than four hours a day on the Net could soon be treated on the NHS like alcholics and gamblers."
That statement seems a bit too sweeping. I'm going to assume that they mean when such behavior is compulsive, and harmful to the person's well-being (such as using the internet to escape reality, much like alcoholism can be attributed to).
I completely agree that there's not a reason to worry if there's no harm done. Like caffiene addiction, there is possibly harm on a miniscule level, but for most people, it is on such a miniscule level it would be a waste of time, and energy, to break the addiction. It's actually more dangerous to quite caffiene cold-turkey than it is to drink caffienated coffee your entire life.
Anyway, I hope they port. seems like there's quite a lot of unhappy windows developers eager to defect
It seems, to me at least, as is evident from this survey and my own personal experience, that if there were more commercially supported development tools, Linux could take off real fast.
I've never done any development in X, much less a specific WM, but I would surely start if, say, C++ Builder were released for Linux. I only hope they follow code warrior's model and release a free- as well as commercial-version (as I'm an individual, and wouldn't be able to easily pay for expensive development tools).
But alas, since I have no experience with development in X, I can't really comment much further without potentially sounding stupid.
That is not a universally held opinion. I know quite a few beginners that have had no problems learning to use Perl. Perl isn't for everything, but it is a great tool for a lot things.
I would think Perl is only hard to learn for people that have no programming experience, though I personally wouldn't know. When I first started getting into Perl, I already had quite a bit of C/C++ experience. I did a man perl, and about an hour or so later I was hacking away.
Just to clarify, this is the definition of Art (from Oxford American):
the production of something beautiful, skill or ability in such work.
works such as paintings or sculptures produced by skill
any practical skill, a knack, the art of sailing.
By this definition, and open source being defined as a method of creating a program, all you have to do is make the finished product be beautiful by SOMEONE's definition, and it's art.
Have you seen the "Hate Crimes" bill that's going through the house judiciary commitee yet? That's what it will do. It'll make a federal crime out of any crime that is for prejudicial purposes (like killing a jew because he/she is a jew, or assaulting a homosexual because he/she is a homosexual). It's making the motive for the crime the actual crime. It will create a new class of crimes, not just varying degrees on existing crimes. Some people who tesified (i saw the hearings on C-SPAN) said that instead they should simply use existing laws and attach new sentencing guidelines for so-called "hate crimes."
Can you explain to me how Individualism is childish? How getting tormented and ostracized every day of your life is being childish? I love how people say "It's part of growing up. Get over it." I doubt you will even make an effort to understand what is actually happening here. It's not "childish" teenagers "whining" about how they were picked on. It's REAL HUMAN BEINGS venting, talking about the hell that they've gone through, because people like their teachers, parents, administrators, etc just don't listen. They have to tell someone, or they'll end up like Eric & Dylan.
But maybe that's what you want.. destroy individualism and all the problems will go away. That, if anything, is a childish mentality.

Life may be worth living eventually,
The article cites at the bottom:

So much for hard to learn.

I don't know about campaign funding, but if you're a civil libertarian, you can find the voting records on ACLU issues at ACLU's website:
