The Gnumeric spreadsheet from the Gnome project uses XML as it's native file format. I think their's is a project to watch. They also have as a goal to import Excel as perfectly as possible.
I bought this last week. 50 bucks, works perfectly. There is no client software, so I can run it on Linux. It simply plugs into the sound card. As stated, the remote only works in Windows. I hope it gets popular so some programmer whiz will make XMMS work with and X10 remote.
Someone is doing it for Linux: Galeon. Check it out on SourceForge. It uses gecko with a simple GTK interface.
I have absolutely no stability problems with Gnome 1.2. I use it all the time and it hasn't crashed once. Get the latest from Helixcode.
I was there today. It's all Windows. Microscopic Linux presence, relatively speaking.

Actually, my company's enterprise software is written in BBx running on SCO right now. It's still out there in a lot of decent-sized companies.
I'm with you. They could at least charge a reasonable price for it.
