How are guns more easily accessible? Guns are less accessible now than in any other time in American history. 100 years ago almost every boy over the age of 6 had a gun.
Cavalry soldiers who went to church every Sunday had no problem slaughtering Native American women and children, so how can you say it's media violence? They didn't have movies and TV. They did have a very bloodthirsty Old Testament, but I don't think that was the problem either.
You are oversimplifying. I agree with your point that someone (not necessarily the woman) should spend a lot more time with the kids than is currently the norm in this country. Children are growing up ignored and alienated. The divorce rate and lack of a strong family probably contributes more than anything else.
Actually, there were no school shootings here 100 years ago when almost every boy over the age of 6 had a gun.
Of course, back then cavalry soldiers (in Canada too) who went to church every Sunday had no qualms about slaughtering Native American women and children, so the problem of violence is probably not related to movies, TV or music either.
The current problem (IMHO) is alienation and lack of moral education, not guns. People tend to ignore their children or assume that they know right from wrong; modern Americans are extremely self-centered. The culture is sick, but not in the way you think.
I especially like the part where King Solomon (I think, or maybe David) sends one of his officers off to the front of the war to die so he can sleep with his wife.
I agree. The purpose of my post was to foster discussion of this (it worked:)
The Democrats are just as guilty of meddling though, both parties are full of hypocrites. Our founding fathers have been spinning in their graves for at least 100 years.
To be fair, there are people in both parties who are level headed, freedom loving citizens who are quite aware of the current sorry state of the union. Unfortunately, they are few and far between.
That is kind of odd. Didn't their marketeers ever take a composition course? You're supposed to state your position unequivocably without resorting to "I think that..." or "We believe that..." or "In my opinion..."
Maybe it's different when you're talking about an actual product rather than academic theories, but I've never seen other vendors use such wishy-washy language.
But for Linux appearing on the horizon Microsoft would be mopping up the remains of UNIX like a piece of fresh bread on a plate of gravy.
Oh right, like datacenters running Oracle on 64 cpu Sun boxes or running simulations on 128 cpu SGI boxes were just going to replace them with crappy x86 NT servers, but changed their minds when Linux showed up?
You don't know much about computing outside of the home desktop do you? Yet you post that speculative trash as if it were the God-given truth... I hate it when people do that.
Yes, the Linux "emulation" is really just a translation of calls to the kernel. There is no speed hit at all other than the initial load time of the LKM (at boot time or whenever you first need it).
Right on brother. At our high school the skaters, punks and geeks all hung out together because none of us had any respect for the image-conscious preppies or the redneck headbangers, and they admitted no respect for us. I was a skater and a geek; I remember practicing ollie-to-wall-rides behind the school while pondering the best way to go about porting a PASCAL D&D character generation program to assembler for class (yes, I had a cool CS teacher):)
Odd to see someone like Barlow dissing skaters, just ignorance I guess.
Artistic works are also information. As someone recently demonstrated with the DeCSS code you could take anything on your computer (a PNG of a painting, an MP3 of a song) and break it down to a prime number. There, it's a prime number. Copyright that, I dare you.
Copyright and patents are dead, they just don't know it yet. It may be centuries before they're gone, but leave us they will.
Paying for software is not the reason for the "Free Software" or "Open Source" movements. The whole issue is whether or not you get the source code to the instructions being run on your machine, and whether you can share the information with others.
BTW, how do you know the Daily Show doesn't deserve a Peabody if you don't have cable?
A 13-yr-old 1337 h4x0r dropped his wang long enough to post a vicious and scathing remark on slashdot.org today.
"Linux is for faggots," quoth he. But he didn't stop there. No, he went straight for the jugular. "shut the fuck up you cocksucking zealots," he continued.
"I'm heartbroken," an anonymous coward told us, "I mean I really didn't know that Linux was for homosexuals. I guess that means I'm denying my true self. I am going to seek counseling and I recommend that other Linux users under the illusion that they are straight do the same."
The community seems to be in shambles after the devastating revelation. One vendor however, who wishes to remain anonymous for now, is planning on cashing in on this tragedy. "We are marketing a new line of swishy stuffed penguins complete with leather-boy caps, aviator sunglasses, vests and assless pants," their marketing director told us, "We feel that coming out of the closet and going public with this is the best thing the Linux community can do. And if someone can make a few bucks off an otherwise unfortunate situation, well, more power to them. It might as well be us."
(I submitted this InternetWeek story yesterday morning and it was rejected. How come it's accepted a day late?)
Just a guess, but it's probably because there is more than one person over at slashdot looking at the submissions queue. Whoever saw yours didn't think it was "Stuff that Matters". Someone else saw the same submission by a different person and thought it was worth posting.
(shrug)
Either that or they all hate you and are trying to piss you off.:^)
The users I support don't know how to use Windows either. Most of them call tech support to copy a file to a floppy. So there would be no retraining required.:) Most of them curse Windows bugs and instability every day and would much rather have a stable desktop.
That being said, I agree that if you have a lot of custom software there is little point in switching. And, with Win 2000 Terminal Server and SMS, Windows support doesn't suck nearly as much as it did in the early days of NT.
Personally, I find Python/TK much easier to develop with than VB. I use it in Windows and Linux. I don't know if there's a GUI IDE for it because it's so easy I've never felt the need to even look for one.
Life is never easy for anyone, but it does get better after high school if you're one of us geek types. Stick with it. If you need the ear of a complete stranger to spill your guts to, drop me a line (email address above, take out the spaces).
Read my reply to anonymous coward above before calling me "sheeple"... and buy yourself a dictionary.
I wasn't sure if that would work in a script, but yeah :)

Well, no that wasn't my point, but I see yours.

... is the Republican party interested in censorship? I thought they were all about less government interference in peoples' lives.

I don't understand, you'd rather they just buried all the code, never to be seen again? Is that a sign of respect? Please explain.

There are many interesting discussions on this subject here.

Actually, the closer to the truth a joke is the more funny it is. In short, I think you're full of it.

And Python is a much nicer language than Basic.

It doesnt prevent car crashes, cancer...
Actually, the same technology might be used to prevent cancer by selectively killing off only cancer cells... but I get your point.
Carl Sagan was captain of a championship college basketball team.
You don't get much nerdier than old Carl (may he rest in peace (and not return from the grave hungry for human brains)).
