SideFX is a smaller company than Alias and they have demo versions (which are significantly less restrictive than maya ple) of Houdini for both IRIX and Solaris.
Never had much beef with RealPlayer myself. At the moment I'm using RP8 on irix and it works very well. I use it to watch tutorial videos for software (they're in rm format) and playing mp3s (the default media player on irix doesn't seem to play mp3s). The first few times I used it it would core-dump on exit, but it runs fine now. Not sure what that was about.
I didn't have a hard time finding it either. I remember the free players were harder to find on their page so I know what the bitching is about, but right now the site seems easy enough to navigate.
