I know exactly what you mean.
I find that virus programs help a lot when keeping the pattern files up to date.
Unfortunately they can't rely on automatic OS updates (56k connection), so I have to help them to defensively install selected updates - almost always after it's too late.
A personal firewall is also a good idea, for both the experienced and inexperienced users.
