Well, things like acupuncture and such may not be the cure for everything, but I wouldn't call all such alternate methods complete "quakery." More and more there is testing going on proving methods such as acupuncture, acupressure, moxibustion, and other Asian healing forms are effective (these are the only ones I have any knowledge of myself, so I can't comment on any others). Sure, when they developed the theories they didn't do the same type of testing we did, but that does not make them automatically ineffective.

Basically, it means the pilot and ship were both good enough to swing in closer to planets and other anomalies (such as anomalies), thus creating a shorter path. Perhaps even use a body's gravity field to slingshot around too (not really sure). So basically, fast and manueverable ship + skilled pilot = shorter distance required.

Of course it could backfire and I'd end up instead getting an apology letter from a pornstar with an offer for free...you know.
Only on /. would people consider this to be the plan "backfiring."

Well, one comment I must say in response to this...my school participated this year, and the teacher that ran the robotics club at our school that participated in this came back and told us how for some schools, there were professional engineers ON SITE with some of the schools, doing the reworking. Now, perhaps this isn't THAT widespread, I don't know, but I think this is something else you need to keep in mind.
