Another thing that's scary: Some people actually set up mail servers to auto-reroute mail from outside their domain.

About your conjecture about the purpose of AOLers, I think their usefulness being fodder is outweighed by their tendency to forward and propogate those spams/chain mails..

What would you rather have them compare it to? Almost all of today's image/audio/video popular formats are lossy compression, so I imagine they just picked a format that every dumbass was familiar with. Besides, the mp3 quality difference is almost negligible.

If you want to have a problem with something, have a problem with the shitty .ASF format, where they have sacrificed every semblence of quality video for a small file format.

Last time I checked, Barbie wasn't exactly "intellectual" property.

Besides, it's not theft if it is done as a parody, or in this case, using a derivative of the trademarked name in a totally different market.

You could even make the "fair use" argument here..
So, AC, what part of "superfluous lawsuit" don't you understand?

The problem is that unless people are prompted to do so, they, by in large, will NOT learn from their mistakes, not become security conscious, and will likely run the next .VBS script that comes their way.

The problem is not the fact that clueless people are on the internet. The problem is that those people are inhibiting the usability of it for the rest of us. Why not apply your Darwin approach to the "license test". Make people take an initative and get some clue before they go spamming my mailbox. Those that fail the test, well there's your Darwinism.

Just as you learn Algebra before attempting Calculus, I think Basic or Pascal provides a good introduction into programming. It lets a kid understand the notion of variables and procedures without having to worry about memory management or whatnot...

  8. Student body has little voice on Microsoft and MIT Team Together · · Score: 1

(I'm an undergrad, currently) Recently the administration required all freshmen to be housed on campus for their first year. This would mean that the thriving Greek system at MIT would have to rush sophomores instead of freshmen, and would likely result in the closure of some houses.

There were huge protests by the student body against the administrations actions, and although an overwhelming number of students were against the policy, it looks as though MIT is going ahead with its original plan.

In the same way, I don't think the MIT administration will change its mind about taking the money from Microsoft. Think about it: The students who are screaming against the alliance will be gone in 4 years with graduation. All they have to do is wait, and people will forget about it.

I am an MIT undergrad at the moment, and although I'm not very happy about the announcement, I don't think it's going to have that big of an impact on student life.

Let's face it, there are already free copies of windoze to whomever wants that OS. The fact that so many people choose *nix over windoze is a testament to personal choice that I think will continue, for atleast the foreseeable future.

Keep in mind, this was just made public. I'm positive there will be protests / angry opinion columns about the pact, since this was an administrative decision, not one of the students.
