I watched "Moon Child", the VCD verison, and BOTH times when Xine reached the end of the VCD, as the last of the credits rolled, the entire laptop locke up.
Nothing worked, not even ctrl+fn+someletter would work. I am an avid Lxr, and I only use win98 inside Win4Lin, but last night I even had that off, I reniced MySQL to something like +15, and at one point reniced Xine to -9 or -10 before shutting it and restarting it.
However, I was off-line, and did not even have Firestarter nor Etherape running, so my CPU is not being overloaded. I do notice, unrelated to Xine, that running Win & in X4ce starts MUCH faster (as when KDE is FRESHLY run) than currently in KDE. I imagine one of my hidden dot files or authority or temp files is trashed, or maybe something in a win4lin path is hozed. Maybe my box has been cracked weeks ago. I dunno. Have to check my logs.
However, I accept that xine is.9.x release, and has not normally done this on other DVDs or VCDs I've watched. Just with Moon Child, the Japanese version with English & Jpns/Chns subtitles. Periodically, after taking 10 screen snaps with Xine's camera icon, Xine would just disappear. I'd then have to stop Alsa, by running/etc/rc5.d/S17also force-restart
And if Xine was alive at that point, the force-restart would kill it dead.
I know this is not exactly along the lines of browsers, but if VCDs and DVDs are being watched while a user is on-line, who knows if a batch of bad code is being fed to the userspace tools? Who knows if other compromises already on the box are aggregating to worsen things with a new breach's arrival. Fortunately, I prefer to yank my ethernet anytime I'm not surfing. I tend to yank my bband router, too, to keep its visibility low.
This would NoT be the "mlife" that ms would like to live down... if all these birds began "cussin' up a storm", making late wakers "sleepless in Seattle", HOOO!!!!

Why doesn't the US (or any for that matter) government unplug the anal probiscus of the rich and powerful and start forcing (our) businesses OUT of markets where we make enemies.
I profoundly believe that bin-ladens don't arrive from a vacuum. We're told we're responsible for our own actions and inactions, yet we're also called products of our environment. Well, bin laden is either going off on a secret script created by elites who need a reason to keep up the Cold War military production rate, or bin Laden is doing what he thinks is 'rectificatin' of imperialist/colonialist vermin invading simple or otherwise backwards people who out to not be forced to "catch up with the times". I don't condone hijacking or blowing up civilians. But, shit happens. I'd RATHER see OBL be a bit more focused and surgical about WHO he goes after, not just indiscriminantly attack civilians whos votes are, at the national level, effectively powerless when someone like bush and rove hijack the white house.
I'm sure bin Laden and others US-haters would diminish their bent on destruction if we (or any technical/financial nation) would pull out and stop practicing "expand or die" business practices or "god is my pilot" religious articles or cultural "manifest destiny" rampages.
Because big business, selected individuals among the rich, and fighting warlords or international treasure-seekers just don't know when to quit, we have constant fighting and waste of lives. We're WASTING untold BILLIONS, partly because the current cabal in the WH is IN BED with many of the people following what I suspect are SCRIPTS to shake up and keep off balance many of the world's people who are increasingly coming under social, personal, and privacy attack JUST because a too-calm world would undermine the profits gained by defense industry and certain rich types.
To me, terrorism is the result of being denied a voice. Imagine this: The police run you in or ticket you for something. Maybe you deserved it once, maybe not. But, they keep running you or your friends in. Internal Affairs or the Civilian Review Board don't respond to your claims, or dismiss you gruffily. Eventually, you TIRE of the shit, the lack of responsiveness, the lack of justice or whatnot, and you send a nastygram. They retaliate by having you kneecapped or beaten. You escalate by torching some squad cars, but are caught on footage. They escalate, and tit-for-tat continues until civilians are dragged into it.

Imagine, though, if nations took to cloning their premiers, princes, sultans, presidents, lords, and key diplomats. Anytime they got fragged by terrorists, they'd be "regenerated" or "pulled from the incubator."
Morally, I am no longer sure if it would be immoral to kill off clones of despicable nefarious, since there is a good deal of our destiny mapped genetically. Even if a clone is not allowed to run for presidency, it could still become an alcoholic, unless that predisposition were located and removed. It could be raised as a monk, and yet it still could impose religious values on a nation that is S'POSED to value the separation between church and state.
But, what I like about what happened to ONE of they Weyouns was what happend after Ezrii Dax and Worf were captured and imprisoned aboard a G'em H'dar ship. Weyoun #(#?) taunted the hell out of Worf, and Worf, feeling "f$%k this" leapt at Weyoun #?, grabbed him by the neck in the palm of his huge hands, and Klingon-snapped his damned neck.
Weyoun's collapsed like a rag doll. How Worf dispensed with him, how he fell, and how the camera recorded it was superb! That was worth a number of rewinds! It was more minutes than Weyoun clones before I could stop laughing. That few seconds of footage ALONE is worth the price of the DVD.
On a (more) serious, or, maybe serous, note, IMAGINE if governments decided to clone hardy humans, use them for dangerous or fatal industrial work, discarded them, and then kept the activity secret. Mean time, humans are being displaced or disposed of, in fatal corporeal fashion, only to be replaced with clones.
These clones are engineered to be non-reproduction-capable. They receive no individuality or freedom to read unauthorized material, receive minimal health care, and are discarded rather than "repaired".
Would you:
-- DESTROY such an apparatus and malevolently execute or decapitate ALL involved with authorizing, experimenting, funding, and protecting said program?
-- Look the other way and enjoy your clone-manufacture or ored goods?
-- Ameliorate the clones' situation by seeking civil, moral, and societal rights for them (and, wouldn't it be interesting if THEIR rights occurred faster than the minorities received civil rights?)?
-- Set them free (and educate them as to their condition)?
What you say here COULD be monitored by TOTAL SECURITY FASCISTS in power at this or any other time.

I am sure the world would be in a HELL of a lot more chaos if bush's or ronald dumbsfeld's brains were hooked to the "World Machine-Brain-Interface". Hell it would be in chaos if even MY brain were hooked up, mainly becuase I'd be rackin' up a shitload of clock cycles doing a corrupt-politician-purge (CPP666 of sorts). Of course, I'd be using a Linux M-BI/B-MI and a hepta-tetra-quad of CPUs. The whole damned thing would have to use the Earth's CORE as a heat sink just to keep curious george and ronald D at bay.
Maybe if we hooked all of congress' brains up in concert with bush's brain, then there truly might BE PROGress out of CONgress! In the end, they'd all be burned out and maybe be can rebuild our government. Spontaneous combustion would leave them all interred in chairs, charred like Crispy-Chris, with LED's blinkin' away. Maybe we could stack all their asses up on the White House lawn during Christma...ahem, winter holiday and point one of those satellites down on them. The feed's viewership would eclipse the Olympics, the elections, and Titanic combined.
