I picked the ps2 first years ago because I could play dvds on it, however lamely, without having to buy the remote at first (I did buy one later), and because I knew I wanted to keep playing Final Fantasy. I was also upset that Microsoft cancelled the two movie-tie-in "A.I." games, and was waiting to see other compelling titles.
Now that I haven't used my ps2 in months for games, and the next Final Fantasy is going to be online (and a rip-off for the kit and the monthly fee), I'm looking to get another game system.
Is gamecube is really all that compelling compared to xbox? What are the major non-sport, non-fps titles for each platform? I'm already leaning to xbox because it will play dvds so I can just unplug and pack away the ps2 for a while, but I haven't compared them otherwise.
