"Hell yes. Just go and listen to normal Palestinian or Israelite."
I live in the US so all I see is what's on TV. I have seen numerous govt officials, professors, non govt organizations, thinktanks and yes lots of interviews by "normal" people. I have never ever heard one interview where somebody didn't dredge up the past. It all starts in history. A long time ago god promised the jews some land and unfortunately for the palestenians they happen to living there.
'There are people on both sides who wish this war ended"
I don't doubt that. Alas they must be a tiny minority. If the majority of the people on both sides wanted the war to end it would. They would elect less radical leaders, they would push for less radical policies. But they don't. Arafat died and who will they elect? Abbas? What if sharon left who would get elected? Probably netanyahu and he makes sharon look like a peacenick.

Sharon is in partnership for a casino to be opened up in palestine so was arafat. That's right sharon and arafat were in the same partnership in a casino along with some european interests.
When it came to fleecing the palestenians they were both of the same mind.
How many times has Sharon been investigated for corruption anyway? Aren't there some probes still going on?
Why think about something that will never happen. There will never be peace between people who have been warring for thousands of years.
It will go on until one side succeeds in killing every last one of the other.
What did god say? "kill them all, kill their kids, kill their animals, salt the earth so that you even kill their plants".
"It's time for both sides to work it out regardless of the past."
Have you ever heard any palestenian or israeli ever have a conversation about this subject without reeling off all the wrongdoings the evil others did in the past? Won't happen.
"It could be that the intent of the lesson was to demonstrate familiarity with the cin / cout or System.in.read() / System.out.print()"
It wasn't. It was to test our knowledge of case statements and such.
You sure think you know a lot about my assignment and professor even though you were not there. I was supposed to demonstrate my knowledge of the case statement and I did it with a simple gui instead of printing things out. I had the required case statements covered and should have gotten a 100% on the project. Instead the fuckwad gave me a zero. I redid it by taking the gui code out (leaving the core code intact) and he accepted it when I dumbed it down for him.
I suspect he hadn't read that far ahead in the book he was teaching, either that or he was on a power trip and wanted to teach me to shut up and sit down.
"If the GUI isn't very valuable in the given situation, and the time you spent on building it could have been spent building something else that is more valuable, then your boss is likely to be annoyed with you, and with some reason."
Really? Then you should never do any exra work. You should never polish up programs.
"That extra mile isn't yours to give, unless you built the GUI on your own time."
I was in school ya moron. I was doing an assignment. It was all on my time.
" Did your program also execute perfectly as described in the specifications?"
Yes it did.
"Now, if you were told to write a command line program"
No I wasn't.
"If you were asked for a console app and failed to deliver one - regardless of what else you came up with - then your professor was absolutely 100% correct to fail you."
The program specs were general. Take some input, do something with, display the result to user. That's it. The teacher never specified how you were to do any of that.
"You failed because you were given a project with defined objectives and your work product did not meet the design criteria."
That's no true. My program met every criterea laid out by the teacher. It just had a GUI that's all. The requirements never said "the program shall not have a GUI".
"It works like that in the real world too. Perhaps there was more than one lesson in there? "
NO it does not work like that in the real world. In the real world if you take the time to put a nice gui on programs people like it (as long as the core requirements are met). In the real world your boss appreciates you going the extra mile.
It just sounds really intellectually sloppy no matter what you call it.
The idea that not believing in something is a religion for example is downright stupid. I also don't believe that the moon is made our of green cheese does that make me religious? Is that a religios decision?
If the points you laid out are the core workings of this "philosophy" I say it does not hold water. It's rife with sloppy logic.
"Yeah, I know that the US is the ultimate source of my freedom to say this and that most other countries in the world, such as France, Germany, Russia, and China are much worse at the things I am about the accuse the US of, but..."."
Why? The freepers go around with that mantra 24X7 so why do we have to repeat it?
Many people (including me) just don't see the point in trying to have an intelligent conversation with christians about their god. I know I have tried many times but what's the use? You aren't going to change anybodies mind.
I have friends who are ministers and they know they can't really answer any of my questions, they know they can't resolve any of the contradictions or overcome many of the nasty bits.
In the end they rely on "god moves in mysterious ways" and "you have to have faith". I must say though that one friend I have who is born again (zealot) claims to have actually seen god and had a conversation with him.
What's going on? It's called "the drumbeat". In washington everything is driven by the drumbeat. Somebody dropped the "they can bring down planes with lasers" meme in washington DC and the "we have to do something about it" drums started beating.
Once those drums are beating they won't stop until people are dead and tortured and may lives are made miserable.
Honestly folks why are you taking advice from Joel.
I am sure he is a bright and nice guy but let's face it who is he to give you advice? He runs a small company making two (count them TWO) niche products. I am sure he makes decent living and maybe his programmers get paid a little more then the average but come on now is this your idea of a success story?
Take advice from the guy who runs GE or IBM. Take advice from Ted Turner or Donal Trump who built empires out of nothing. Take advice from Ghandi who led an entire country into freedom. Take advice from Jefferson, or Lincoln, or even Jesus or Budha.
"School is not there to hold your hand and tell you what to think or believe"
I disagree vehemently. WHen I was going to school I would get punished for taking the extra steps. For example once I failed a programming assignment because my program had a GUI and "we haven't learned that yet".
Matt Groenig said it best.
"School prepares you for life by teaching you to sit quietly at your desk doing what you are told".
That's because god is a terrible cruel being who clearly asks his followers to kill people we may care about.
What do christians do when they don't want to kill homosexuals even though god has told them to do it? They ignore that sentence of the bible and fixate on other sentences.
Everybody does that. The bible is a large document and contradicts itself constantly. There are good things in it and there are horrible repugnant things in it.
Most people completely ignore the bad stuff, an extremely tiny percentage of the people obey the good stuff, most people kind of acknowledge the good stuff but can't be bothered to actually change their lifestyle to actually practice any of it.
There are as many bibles as there are christians. Each christian has taken the stuff they want to obey and ignored the rest. For most christians the bible can fit on a postcard (ok maybe a brochure).
Think about it. Almost 70% of americans go to church regularly. If each one of those people practiced the kind of charity jesus preached there would be no hunger or poverty in the world.
What you didn't get subsiddized student loans, work study programs, subsidized state tuition, and pell grants?
Get back to me when you actually pay for your education.
1) so what? If they can't ship the worker here they can ship the job to India.
2) So what? were you planning on working in a job that requires a clearance? How many of those are there? How many of those exclude foreign nationals?

What can you possibly do that an indian or a chinese could not? I mean that sincerely.

What is your definition of "very successful"?
" Did your program also execute perfectly as described in the specifications?"
Yes it did.
"Now, if you were told to write a command line program"
No I wasn't.
"If you were asked for a console app and failed to deliver one - regardless of what else you came up with - then your professor was absolutely 100% correct to fail you."
The program specs were general. Take some input, do something with, display the result to user. That's it. The teacher never specified how you were to do any of that.
My program fulfilled his criterea 150%.
"You failed because you were given a project with defined objectives and your work product did not meet the design criteria."
That's no true. My program met every criterea laid out by the teacher. It just had a GUI that's all. The requirements never said "the program shall not have a GUI".

SO are the freeper dancing around GW singing "holy holy holy". So what?
Besides it's not like it's all cut and dried anyway.

How is it a science then?

The ten commandments are in the old testament. You are saying they are no longer valid then right?
Oh and there are plenty of vile, ugly and repugnant things in the new testament too.
I can't prove it. I just feel it in my gut. The universe is too big and light is too slow.
What's going on? It's called "the drumbeat". In washington everything is driven by the drumbeat. Somebody dropped the "they can bring down planes with lasers" meme in washington DC and the "we have to do something about it" drums started beating.

Hey now. His company makes TWO products. Yes TWO whole products. So don't go making fun of Joel until you too make 80 or 90 grand a year.
Disclaimer I don't actually know how much Joel bring home but I bet most of it is from his book.
Honestly folks why are you taking advice from Joel.
I am sure he is a bright and nice guy but let's face it who is he to give you advice? He runs a small company making two (count them TWO) niche products. Why not add other options too. I am curius as to why you guys stopped at these options.
