  1. Annotated on Ask Slashdot: Going Beyond Comment Threads? · · Score: 1

I think that instead of a list box at the bottom of the page, you have a slider on the side of the page that annotates the article with that users comments. That way specific arguments/comments can be made right in context with the article. Also this will allow for easier detection/elimination of spam because it won't annotate correctly (at least at first).
This would make reading the comments easier because they are in the context of article and reduce the amount of quoting of the original article.

  2. Arrogance on The Internet Is 'Built Wrong' · · Score: 2, Interesting

This idiot is ... well an idiot.
The internet wasn't built in its current form!
It evolved into what we see today. The equipment used to build ARPA-net and such networks that became the internet was never supposed to be the high speed, huge subscriber numbers, massive number of application, porn-delivery system that we have today. It was made to exchange simple data. That was it.
And you can't just UPGRADE the internet (pssst... its not like in southpark and its just a big Linksys WRT54G router... really... honest!) Its a lot of moving parts.
I hate it when people with ZERO knowledge and less history try to say something is broken because their little app doesn't work correctly. Here's a hint... write cleaner, more efficient networking code!!! You'd be amazed how well that works (too bad this moron seems incapable of that).

    Stupid should be painful!

  8. Both have their place on Likely Success of Internet-Related Business Models? · · Score: 1
The infrastructure companies and the dot.coms have their place. Both models can work, and which model will dominate is a possible area of discussion and one that is interesting.

True dot coms have the 'advantage' of not having to maintain much 'real' stuff other then inventory and network. Whereas infrastrucure (not my word) companies have a larger amount of overhead because they actually have to make or do something (Amazon doesn't make or do anything, it just resells stuff). The true dot com model is quite vulnerable to competition, it doesn't take much to eat away at market share of a dot.com although competing toe to toe with amazon would take a huge investment upfront, its not impossible. Infrastrucure plays are a bit safer since they actually have something 'real' that can't be easily or legaly duplicated, although Huawei has tried.

So for 'real' items infrastructure plays will dominate and continue to dominate. For retail or consumer items, mainly commodity items, true dot.coms can't be touched due to their lower overhead. Both will have their place, but with more and more items becoming commodity items I think that true dot.coms will come out on top in the mid-term.

My humble (not well researched and possibly wrong) opinion.

My fav by far is the OLD IBM keyboards that actually clicked and you could feel them click. I also keep a couple happy hacker keyboards around for my laptop and other smaller places.
My advise, find a keyborad that you like (it may take some time and/or eBay) then buy a half dozen of them.

  11. Bi-Polar + ADHD on Working with ADHD? · · Score: 1

I have been hyperactive all my life and have had ADHD all my life and have dealt with it without resorting to drugs. My parents never were given the option of Ritalin no less would then ever dream of my taking it. It has been quite hard to deal with (especially when I was a kid).
To make matters worse I was recently diagnosed as bi-polar (although not severe). There are times when my condition helps quite a bit (how many ~30 year olds can code for 72 hours straight?? and good code mind you). But it has also made certain things difficult. I find there are certain people that I cannot get along or work with. Also there are some times that I am totally unable to concentrate and that getting any work done becomes impossible no matter how hard I try.

I have dealt with this condition all my life and have found ways of dealing with it effectively. I schedule things and write them down (whiteboards are great for this, but I must do this even at home). I limit my caffinee and sugar intake (only 1 starbucks a day). I eat (sounds silly, but as long as I am eating non-sugarry stuff its easier to operate, not sure why. I eat a 5lb bag of carrots in an amazing short amount of time). I take walks and stare at a lake ( basically this calms me down for a while and allows me to concentrate). I try to deal with it ( a concious effort 24 hours a day ). I know that I have a condition and I don't try to kid myself (never have).

I now work for a large ISP and previously worked for a couple larger companies doing network engineering and network security. Overall I am quite good at my job and always have been. It has become easier over the years, partly because I am aging, and partly because I am getting better at dealing with it rather then letting it deal with me (does that make sense?)

My two nieces are now ~9 and 7. Their parents put them on ritalin at the first sign of ADHD and now I hate seeing them ( and hate their parents for destroying their kids). They are like zombies and are now in need of the drug for anything like normality. This is not an isolated case in my experience.

My last bit of drivel: If Ritalin is helping you, and not hurting you, Great. I would suggest that you monitor yourself for side-effects and every month or so attempt to lower the dose or even go cold-turkey for a while to see how it goes. Make sure that you can get off the drug. Also attempt to deal with the problem yourself. I know several people (several co-workers) with varing degrees (and age-groups) of ADHD, some deal well others dont. The ones that are able to deal with it well on their own tend to end up better for it.

    1) where do you work, those people sound like utter morons. I deal with 100's of users a day, most of whom are college students and staff though so the clue level is around average.

    2) I recently gave my father (50) a new machine. I never put a second thought into puting win98 on it. All the reasons have been stated already. (I dont want to be tech support all the time, Its actually more stable then some of the zealots here believe, As long as you are just using it for web surfing and the occational word processing session your fine.)

    3) My father jsut went out a bought a new digital camera (USB) what if ol' grand-dad does that? There is no support for all the varients out there. And no tech support in the world will try and help him with that. Also what if he wants to use something like quicken??? or maybe something else??? What about going to sites that require a plug-in??? The win98 machine can do this ok (not 100% but ok) the linux machine........well no you have to manually do some stuff.

Bottom line: It aint broke, dont fix it. Any OS requires the requisite training. Spend the time training him now, or face a myriad of headaces later.

So now I have a special playlist called instrumental, its mainly Mozart, Chopin, and Beethoven. I have a few things like the Babylon 5 soundtrack (with music from the last episode), and the SW:TPM soundtrack (Only 3 tracks though).
    Im finding fewer errors now.

  16. PAM and Kerb on UNIX Machines that don't use /etc/passwd · · Score: 1

Two methods that I know of and use are PAM modules, and kerberos. PAM is by far the easiest, you just plug it in (as the name suggests) and it connects to some third machine for authentication. With kerberos you can also (although not suggested) replace the login executable with the krb5login, thus making all logins go through the kerberos server. Each method adds another layer to manage and a sysadmin must realize this before doing it, and ask "Is it worth all the trouble, and would it be easier/better to just tighted security on the machine?"
