    And was Exxon told before the war that it would not get those contracts, or did its failure to obtain them occur after the war started? Of course, that's when happens when you can't get one of your former employees elected as Vice-President.

    September 24, 1862 is the date President Lincoln suspended Habeas Corpus during the American Civil War, a time of rebellion (certainly as defined from his perspective). It was only suspended for those considered to be in rebellion.

    No. Lincoln suspended it in 1861 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ex_Parte_Merryman, but he did issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on Sept 22, 1862
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emancipation_Proclamation, so it would appear that the OP objects to the loss of freedom to enslave.

    What if you included this in your LaTex? \url{file:///C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/cmd.exe} Maybe you could make it work with the \providecommand macro?

    I don't know if that would work on my Ubuntu box :-). Also, I believe that violates the "really stupid" clause in my post. As another poster pointed out, one can have \write18{rm -fr /} in a TeX document, and then run tex with the --shell-escape option. Also not a good idea.

    How is LaTeX executable? Unless you do something really stupid, it's just markup, no more executable than plain HTML.
